The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office is seeking an Evidence Technician (civilian position) to collect and process evidence related to crimes. The Evidence Technician has a variety of critical responsibilities and administrative duties. These responsibilities include maintaining the evidentiary chain of custody and integrity of evidence and property. Under general supervision this position will receive, record, account for, store, safeguard, collect, load, transport, verify, release and disburse evidence, and found or abandoned property. This position maintains separate property areas and performs work as required. A significant degree of initiative, independent judgement, discretion and confidentiality is paramount. All duties and tasks are expected to be performed in an attentive, effective, efficient and safe manner.

Work is generally completed on a regularly scheduled basis; the normal workweek is based on a schedule of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, forty (40) hours per week. This position may require after hour call back in order to assist with evidence storage, occasional travel may be required for training.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

Maintains and inventories all property and evidence under the control of the department.

Receives, collects, stores, releases, inventories, controls, disposes, and maintains security of a wide variety of property and evidence.

Initiates inquiries on property and evidence to obtain the information on ownership, release, and disposition.

Responsible for firearms, narcotics, biohazards, and large sums of money.

Communicates information related to property and evidence in person, via telephone, written correspondence, and email.

Maintains certifications as necessary for position.

Prepares property and evidence for shipment and/or transport to crime laboratories and other destinations as needed.

Instructs department personnel in best practices and proper methods of packaging all types of evidence property.

Works with department personnel to package and log evidence, obtain dispositions, and to obtain evidence destruction orders.

Prepares items for auction, release, or destruction in accordance with North Carolina General Statutes.

Skills & Abilities Education & Experience Minimum Qualifications Must be at least 21 years of age, High School Diploma or equivalent, Must be able to successfully pass the following: Oral Interview, Background Check and Polygraph Examination

Preferred Qualifications Two (2) years experience with a law enforcement agency with duties closely related to those described above or equivalent combination of experience., Prior training, education, and or/experience with handling of law enforcement evidence, Experience with crime scene processing and evidence collection, Experience with DCI and ACSI databases.

Computer Skills Must have a basic to intermediate functional knowledge of computers with the ability to learn and use an in-house software, accurately to input, identify and track status of transactions of all items.

License/Credentials/Requirement Possession of a valid NC driver's license is required with the ability to maintain a driving record in accordance with Alamance County policy. Successful completion of the entire certification process established by the NC Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission for CLEO, preferred or obtained within one year of sworn position.

Physical Demands The position requires frequent standing, walking, and sitting; occasional manual manipulation, reaching, climbing, and crawling. The employee may be required to lift or carry up to 50 lbs on occasion and push or pull objects weighing up to 100 lbs. The role also involves constant communication, vision and hearing demands, exposure to bodily fluids, and hazardous materials.
