Are you a certified sign language interpreter looking for meaningful remote work in education? VocoVision connects professional interpreters with virtual K-12 programs serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing students across Kentucky. We're building a talent pool of qualified interpreters for positions that frequently become available.
Opportunity Virtual education has created new pathways for student access, and skilled interpreters make this possible. This interpreting role supports students from elementary through high school levels, typically involving 35-40 hours of scheduled interpretation per week. Your services will benefit a caseload of 50-60 students, requiring flexibility across age groups, academic subjects, and individual communication approaches.
Interpretation in virtual classrooms differs significantly from in‑person settings. The screen becomes your interpreting space, requiring precise positioning, excellent lighting, and awareness of how signing translates through video. You'll interpret live instruction in real‑time, support breakout room activities and small group work, facilitate communication during virtual assemblies or school events, and ensure students maintain full participation in their educational experience.
What You’ll Do Daily Educational interpreting encompasses diverse responsibilities beyond direct interpretation. You’ll review lesson plans and materials to prepare for specialized vocabulary, consult with teachers about communication access and visual modifications, interpret during IEP meetings and parent‑teacher conferences, support testing accommodations and assessment procedures, and maintain professional records of interpreting services and student communication needs.
Collaboration forms the foundation of effective educational interpreting. You’ll communicate regularly with classroom teachers about upcoming content, coordinate with special education staff regarding accommodation strategies, participate in team meetings focused on student progress and support plans, provide professional insight about communication access barriers, and engage with families about student communication preferences and goals.
Mandatory Qualifications
Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment: 4.0 score minimum
Written EIPA: Successfully completed
Educational interpreting experience: 2+ years in school environments
Background check: Clear criminal background screening
Professional Competencies
Fluency in ASL with strong educational vocabulary
Understanding of Deaf culture and educational interpreting ethics
Ability to interpret across content areas and grade levels
Professionalism in team collaboration and documentation
Technical Environment Remote work requires professional‑grade equipment and environment. You’ll need dedicated workspace with professional appearance and minimal distractions, internet service capable of sustained HD video streaming, adjustable webcam positioned for optimal signing visibility, professional lighting that eliminates shadows and provides clear visibility, and backup communication methods for technical contingencies.
