Job Title Juvenile Court Officer 1 (D5) – State of Iowa, Executive Branch.

Overview The Iowa Judicial Branch, in Polk County, seeks an entry–level Juvenile Court Officer 1 to provide juvenile court services on a broad range of matters related to youth casework. After completing required training and guidance, the successful candidate may be considered for promotion to an independent Juvenile Court Officer, making decisions and holding youth accountable to court‑ordered requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Execute Juvenile Court Services casework, including supervising youth on informal and formal probation, conducting investigations, determining and supervising out‑of‑home placement, and taking youth into custody.

Work closely with law enforcement, schools, courts, communities, and other agencies to support programs that reduce delinquent behaviors, using evidence‑based practices in casework, decision‑making, and accountability.

Provide court testimony regarding youth compliance with court expectations, recommend dispositions, and report on program participation.

Collect random urinalysis, fingerprinting, and DNA samples.

Work a rotating on‑call schedule, fielding calls from law enforcement and making decisions related to detention placement or release.

Travel occasionally within the state and, on occasion, out of state.

Maintain accurate and confidential records, ensuring the integrity of all documentation.

Qualifications

Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in law, criminal justice, criminology, psychology, sociology, education, or a related social science.

Knowledge of the Iowa juvenile court legal system and the Iowa Code as it pertains to juvenile delinquency.

Familiarity with community‑based and statewide resources.

Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

Problem‑solving skills and the ability to maintain and secure confidential information.

Reliable transportation and the ability to travel.

Preferred: Experience working, leading, or coaching youth; knowledge of state human and youth services; experience with evidence‑based practices; experience testifying in court; experience with community providers; experience interviewing and writing reports; and experience interacting with court personnel such as law enforcement, attorneys, and judges.

Compensation Pay range: $25.45 – $40.23 per hour. Upon completion of training and approval to work independently, the pay range increases to $30.59 – $48.87 per hour. This is a contract‑covered, FLSA non‑exempt position. The starting salary for new state employees is expected to be at the base of the pay range, with possible adjustments for relevant experience.

Additional Information Juvenile Court Officers have the duties prescribed in Iowa Code Chapter 232. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement with AFSCME. The applicant must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.
