Position Overview:
The Japanese In-Person Interpreter facilitates onsite communication for Limited English Proficient (LEP) communities and healthcare practitioners across multiple settings. This contract position is flexible and offers opportunities to expand your interpreting business with many sessions per day.
Job Functions
Provide effective onsite interpreting sessions in a professional manner.
Always exhibit professional appearance and behavior, including punctuality and preparedness for sessions.
Adapt quickly to new and changing situations.
Adhere to interpreter ethical standards and procedural requirements specific to interpreting context.
Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and work in a diverse environment.
Respect LEP clients, their culture, dialect, and preferences.
Exhibit strong customer service and interpreting aptitude.
Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
Render exact and correct concepts and meanings according to interpreter protocol.
Qualifications
Fluent in Japanese and English with strong verbal communication skills (both directions).
Excellent listening and retention skills for high accuracy.
Successful completion of a proficiency assessment or national certification.
Extensive knowledge of interpreter ethical standards and standards of practice (IMIA, NBCMI, NCIHC).
At least 18 years of age.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to read and write Japanese and English.
Degree or certification in interpreting practices.
National Medical Interpreter Certification by CCHI, NBCMI, or DSHS.
Completion of an accredited medical interpreting training course (e.g., ALTA, MITS, Bridging the Gap, MiTio, Cross-Cultural training, 40‑hour accredited medical courses).
