Overview

This is a re-advertisement. Previous applicants are still being considered for this position and do not need to re-apply Performs skilled mechanical repairs to electrical and hydraulic systems, repairs to pneumatic systems, small equipment repairs (including chainsaws and weed eaters), body work related to accidents or wear/tear, repairs to tires, field service calls, A/C repairs, preventative maintenance, and utilizes diagnostic equipment to diagnose mechanical failures. Diagnoses repairs or replacement of parts on all diesel powered equipment assigned to SCDOT. Performs maintenance and repairs on diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic motors, pumps, cylinders, mowing equipment, tractors, motor-graders, rollers and AMZ machines. Performs welding and fabrication as needed for repairs on various equipment and makes modifications to improve production. Performs electric welding or gas welding. Responsible for shop safety and cleaning of the automotive shop and surrounding areas. Properly stores and disposes of hazardous waste and materials per DHEC regulations and ensures containers are labeled. Performs service calls at field work sites as needed. Assists in maintenance operations during emergencies (inclement weather, etc.) by providing mechanical assistance as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

One and one-half (1.5) years of work experience involving independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical and Work Environment

Physical requirements: bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and manipulating objects of varying size, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Work may occur in a large garage setting and in uncomfortable positions for long periods. May be required to work outside of normal hours, especially during inclement weather or emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment, noise, and oil/grease.
