Job Summary SA Metro Health, Parks & Recreation, Police, Pre‑K 4 SA, Public Works, and Solid Waste Management. Under immediate supervision, this position is responsible for performing manual labor with a wide variety of construction, maintenance, sanitation, and custodial work. Exercises no supervision.
Work Location Will vary based on the assigned department.
Work Hours All schedules are subject to seasonal and rotating adjustments, including days, evenings, and weekends, depending on department and business needs. Shifts and workdays are subject to change to accommodate coverage for evenings, rotating weekends, and holiday shiftwork, as dictated by business needs.
Essential Job Functions
Utilizes maintenance equipment to perform maintenance duties, which may include sweeping or cleaning streets, maintaining shrubs and flowers, clearing weeds and brush, mowing, and trimming public areas, tree maintenance to include trimming/pruning, and performing custodial duties in public areas.
Cleans, repairs, and replaces equipment at City parks and facilities.
Prepares City facilities for various City events.
Participates in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, City buildings, and facilities.
Inspects equipment and reports any equipment in need of maintenance or repair.
Operates tractor mower, dump truck, and other small equipment.
Loads trucks with sand, gravel, or waste material using a hand shovel and lifts and carries materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Department Specific In addition to the duties listed above, some departments may have additional responsibilities associated with their regular work tasks.
Alamodome & Convention Facilities
Moves, sets up, and takes down tables, chairs, risers, and other related fixtures and equipment.
Periodically strips old wax and re-waxes floors using proper equipment and materials.
May be responsible for providing laundry and repair/mending service to maintain table skirts and covers.
Aviation
Performs custodial work in the terminals and city office buildings around the airport campus.
Removes litter and debris from the airport.
May operate a truck, utility vehicle, mower, hand tools, and other small equipment.
Building & Equipment Services
Performs custodial duties in city-owned facilities to include sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning offices and common areas, cleaning restrooms, and performing preventive maintenance floor care.
Prepares City facilities for various City events.
Center City Development Office
Performs janitorial and custodial duties in city-owned parking garages, including sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning offices and common areas, power washing, and cleaning restrooms.
Picks up/remove litter and debris from city parking garages and parking lots.
Development Services
Removes graffiti from both public and private infrastructure throughout the City of San Antonio.
Uses pressure washing and painting tools (including the use of chemicals).
Provides daily contact with citizens to discuss graffiti.
Parks and Recreation
Cleans and maintains parks, pavilions, and other facilities, including restrooms, grounds, and trails.
Performs landscaping duties, including planting, mowing, tree trimming, and chipping.
Prepares and sets up areas for community events.
Will regularly be exposed to extreme outdoor elements and wildlife.
Public Works
Assists with street clean-up operations, power washing, city projects, and labor assistance in a primarily outdoor environment.
Based on the assignment, may operate light equipment, perform landscaping and maintenance of vegetation from channels and right-of-way areas, assist with concrete reconstruction, and complete sidewalk clean-up and water channel clean-up operations.
Solid Waste Management
Flyer Crew: Regularly walks an average of 10 miles a day delivering and assisting city residents with notices for the department's bulky trash pickup operations.
Warehouse/Brush: Assists with unloading vendor deliveries or customer trash or waste drop-offs primarily at site drop-off locations.
Fleet Operations: May assist with minor vehicle maintenance and perform custodial duties in an auto mechanic shop setting.
Job Requirements
Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
One (1) year of experience in labor or maintenance.
Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
