Overview
Job Summary: Responsible for receiving emergency and non-emergency calls, determining the nature and/or severity of the call, and dispatching emergency services using radio and telecommunications systems to transmit details to appropriate emergency services departments/personnel to respond as needed.
Responsibilities
Receive incoming calls and determine the nature of the emergency.
Exercise strong problem-solving and customer service skills and have the ability to work well in stressful situations.
Determine the location and type of call, which responding agency should be dispatched, and the most efficient and safest route to the scene.
Dispatch the appropriate agency and coordinate with other public safety agencies.
Determine if other responders are required (e.g., law enforcement officers, medical responders, firefighters, tow trucks) and dispatch other services as needed.
Communicate with emergency staff to assure timeliness of service.
Be detailed-oriented to relay the proper information to the correct agency.
Prioritize requests for services.
Operate computer dispatch systems efficiently to obtain information for law enforcement, fire and rescue operations, and emergency medical services.
Maintain appropriate paperwork as required.
Compile and tabulate data as necessary.
Comply with applicable state, tribal, and federal regulations regarding the security, safety, and confidentiality of records they create, maintain, transfer, or destroy.
Participate in peer-interviewing and help select staff for the Emergency Communications Department.
Participate in training sessions as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
No supervisory responsibility.
Qualifications
Educational Requirement : High school diploma or general education degree (GED); no exceptions.
Experience Requirement : No additional experience required.
Computer Skills : Proficiency with Internet software, spreadsheet software, and word processing software.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS : Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets Cherokee Nation underwriting rating. Must obtain certifications in Oklahoma Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (OLETS) and/or Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) within one year of hire date. Must possess the National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications below: ICS-100, ICS-200, IS-700.
Other Qualifications : The employee must not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA), or listed on the OIG’s Cumulative Sanction Report or the GSA’s List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals/Entities. Must be able to operate computers, have basic clerical and telecommunications training. Knowledge of Law Enforcement ten codes preferred. Must abide by Cherokee Nation staff codes of conduct and related strategy.
Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands or arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to ten (10) pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to correct/adjust focus.
Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather); work near moving mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outdoor weather conditions; extreme cold or heat (non-weather); risk of electrical shock; work with explosives; risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
