Role Overview This job is a first‑level supervisor supervising ~10‑25 employees and typically reports into a second‑level manager. Provides direct supervision to employees (typically non‑exempt) performing routine work within a single function or work group. Includes input into annual plans/objectives and enforces policies related to the functional area. May contribute to policy development. Receives assignments in the form of tasks and goals and follows established processes to meet the goals of the unit. Executes budgets, develops schedules, and enforces policies and procedures. Provides immediate supervision to a unit or group of employees, assigning tasks and checking work at regular intervals. Directs subordinates to achieve assignments using established guidelines, procedures, and policies. Participates in the interviewing and hiring process. Reviews employees’ performance and recommends employee compensation; recommends disciplinary action as necessary. Approves overtime schedules and working hours. Interacts directly with subordinates and peer groups; engages in routine exchanges of information; interactions with external contacts, if applicable, would be monitored.
Detailed Responsibilities
Receives a daily production schedule from planning; receives material to manufacture, modify or repair products from logistics.
Co‑ordinates these inputs and a variety of resources (e.g., materials, personnel, equipment, etc.) to achieve on‑time production of quality products within budget guidelines.
Identifies and resolves bottlenecks in the production process.
Manages controllable operating expenditure (e.g., scrap, consumables).
Identifies limits to production and guides teams to continuously improve processes.
Manages the performance, motivation and satisfaction of all team members and processes to ensure key quality, output and efficiency targets are met.
Ensures all return‑to‑work interviews and first‑level disciplinary hearings are conducted in a timely, consistent and professional manner.
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
Knowledge of the production process and the tools and equipment used in the process.
Knowledge and understanding of the business unit and how decisions impact customer satisfaction, product quality, on‑time delivery and the profitability of the unit.
Ability to coordinate a wide variety of resources to meet production quality and quantity metrics.
Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of internal and external customers.
Ability to effectively lead, manage, train and motivate a diverse group of employees to achieve high production levels within tight time deadlines and in a highly dynamic manufacturing environment.
Ability to use some or all of the following PC applications: Word, Lotus Notes, Excel, PowerPoint.
Physical Demands
Duties of this position are performed in a manufacturing environment with occasional exposure to elements such as noise, dust, chemicals, operating machinery, temperature extremes, etc.
Duties may require periodic sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.
May require occasional travel.
All demands are carried out within the local existing Health and Safety guidelines.
Typical Experience
Four to six years of relevant experience.
Typical Education
Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or consideration of an equivalent combination of education and experience.
