Overview
Water Service Technician role at City of Charlotte. This position is part of Charlotte Water Department. Salary: $24.00 - $27.81 Commensurate with Experience. Work schedule: 2nd Shift Monday - Friday 2:30 PM - 11:00 PM. Job Summary
This position performs a variety of field work orders related to water services and metering equipment. Responsibilities include turning service on/off, validating meter readings, installing, maintaining, and removing meters, investigating water quality and pressure issues, handling move-out orders when service is cancelled, fixing minor leaks, cleaning meter boxes, and serving as a first responder for water/network emergencies. The role requires decision-making in field conditions, taking corrective actions, interacting with customers, stocking the work truck, and mapping routes. Essential Job Functions
Receives and completes assigned service work orders within a specified time period; accurately records water meter readings and notes conditions at each service address into a portable laptop. Performs field inspection of water meter, register/wiring, and transmitter; validates readings; provides readings for billings. Replaces inoperable or malfunctioning meter and/or metering equipment as required. Performs water flow test on meter to ensure proper function. Inspects meter connections for leaks and replaces materials as needed. Investigates customer complaints regarding meter readings, noise, leaks, water quality, and pressure; escalates when required. Maintains meter boxes by cleaning dirt and debris; ensures lid fits; reports deficiencies or service line repairs. Repairs meter equipment. Reads maps to locate customer addresses, lines, and right of ways. Performs preventative maintenance and daily inspections of vehicle and field computer equipment; reports malfunctions. Reports on fire hydrant leaks, water main leaks, and other distribution issues promptly. Communicates to customers on how a meter and transmitter operate. Serves as first responder to water distribution and network emergencies. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or GED from an accredited school. Two (2) years of related work experience, preferably in customer service and water utility operations. Licenses, Certifications Or Registrations
Requires a valid Driver’s License. Must obtain and maintain a City Driver’s Permit. Desires AWWA Meter Technician Certification. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Knowledge of water utility operations and customer service principles. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to read maps and follow directives; maintain effective working relationships. Physical Demands
The work is light to moderate; duties may require lifting up to 20 pounds and occasional exertion. The role involves balancing, crouching, kneeling, manual dexterity, reaching, standing, and visual acuity related to equipment operation. Work Environment
Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, near traffic, and in environments with dirt, dust, water, insects, and animals. Flexible schedule and ability to report for emergencies are required. Additional Information
