Overview
The Water Fitness Instructor, also known as an aqua fitness instructor or water aerobics instructor, leads safe and effective group exercise classes focusing on aquatic movements to provide a full-body workout while ensuring participants maintain proper buoyancy and safety techniques. Key duties include designing engaging routines, modifying exercises for different abilities, monitoring participants closely, and maintaining a positive and supportive class environment. This position will work out of the Edina Aquatic Center. Possible Class Times:
Early morning, late evenings, weekends Responsibilities
Class Design and Delivery:
Develop and deliver dynamic water fitness classes with a variety of exercises including water jogging, leg lifts, arm movements, and core work, incorporating proper progressions and regressions. A focus on deep water fitness is desired. Modify exercises to accommodate different fitness levels and abilities of participants. Utilize aquatic equipment like noodles, weights, and aqua belts to enhance workouts. Incorporate music and effective cues to guide participants through the class. Safety and Supervision
Ensure all participants are comfortable and safe in deep water, providing proper instructions on buoyancy techniques and water safety. Actively monitor participants throughout the class, addressing any concerns or potential issues promptly. Implement safety protocols and be prepared to assist participants if needed. Client Interaction
Provide positive encouragement and support to motivate participants to reach their fitness goals. Answer questions and address the individual needs of participants. Create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in the class. Administrative Tasks
Maintain accurate class records and attendance logs. Communicate with facility management regarding class schedules, equipment needs, and any concerns. Stay updated on current aquatic fitness trends and best practices. Required Qualifications
Certified Aquatic Fitness Instructor (AFI) or equivalent certification from a recognized organization like the Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA). Swimming Ability:
Strong swimming skills and comfort in deep water. Fitness Knowledge:
Understanding basic exercise principles, muscle groups, and proper form. Communication Skills:
Ability to clearly instruct, provide feedback, and create a positive class environment. Work Environment
Primarily in a swimming pool, working with groups of participants in all levels of water depth. May require flexible scheduling to accommodate various class times. Desired Qualifications
2+ years of Water Aerobics specific training and experience Currently certified in CPR/AED, or be certified within 30 days of hire. 2+ years of practical coaching/mentoring experience preferred.
