Overview
The Equipment Operator will assist in the day to day operations of the Department of Public Works. The Village is seeking an entry level Public Works Equipment Operator who will initially focus on garbage and recycling routes, with additional duties supporting a wide range of Public Works functions as needed. By mid-year 2026 the Village will be transitioning to fully automated curbside garbage and recycling collection vehicles, reducing the physical demands of collection and improving operational efficiencies. Equipment Operators are responsible for solid waste collection, as well as Public Works, Water and Sewer maintenance and improvement duties including roadway maintenance; buildings, grounds and park maintenance and maintenance and repair of the water and sewer systems. This position is also responsible for operation of on and off road construction equipment, light and heavy trucks (including snow and ice control equipment) and miscellaneous construction and public works equipment. The 2026 full salary range for this position is $25.03 - $38.36 per hour, with an anticipated starting range of $25.03 - $27.00 per hour.
Residency Requirement All Village of Greendale Public Works, Water and Sewer employees are required to reside within a 20 mile radius (with an anticipated change to a 30 mile radius in 2026) of the Greendale corporate limits before completion of a one-year probationary employment period.
Essential Responsibilities
Solid waste collection.
Operate equipment for snow and ice control.
Roadway maintenance.
Operate and perform routine maintenance on trucks and equipment.
Perform road, waterworks or sewer construction and repair.
General forestry work to include planting, trimming or removal of trees and/or bushes.
Maintain accurate work reports and a daily timesheet/payroll log.
Maintenance of turf areas such as mowing and fertilization.
Observe work zone safety and maintenance.
Respond to after hours call-in for winter or emergency operations.
Observe, evaluate and report operations and field conditions to the Public Works Director.
Regular and predictable attendance.
Additional Responsibilities
Cleaning and maintenance of Department of Public Works Complex and Hose Tower.
Assist other governmental agencies or Village Departments as assigned.
Street sign installation and maintenance.
Set-up of voting machines and polling locations for elections.
Perform other duties as directed.
Qualifications
High school graduation or equivalency.
Verifiable experience in public works, construction, water/sewer or related field.
Confined space entry training required and provided.
Ability to read, write, understand and communicate in the English language.
Commercial Drivers License required at the time of application. Minimum Class B with air brake.
Ability to obtain a Wisconsin Water Distribution Grade 1 license.
Minimum of 18 years of age at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications
Well developed verbal and written communication skills.
Maturity of judgment and excellent "people" skills.
Background in roadway, waterworks sewer construction/repair, forestry practices and park maintenance.
Background in heavy and light equipment operation and maintenance.
Ability to work safely and observe, understand and obey all safety rules.
Ability to manage time well, must be highly organized and exhibit keen administrative and management skills in all areas.
Ability to perform tasks requiring walking, climbing ladders, drive manual shift, operate equipment with dual hand and foot controls, handle fertilizers, paving materials, paints and general construction materials.
Ability to work under adverse weather conditions.
Ability to perform general manual labor and solid waste collection.
Ability to perform carpentry and masonry work.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and manuals, and procedures manuals.
Ability to use common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
