Nature of Work This position performs journey-level repair and maintenance work on motor vehicles and/or construction and maintenance equipment. Responsibilities include performing routine repairs, preventive maintenance, and assisting with major automotive repairs at the Intercounty Connector (ICC) facility (MD 200).

Perform standard preventive maintenance services such as oil changes, lubricating chassis joints, and overall vehicle inspection.

Assist higher-level mechanics in performing major repairs and extensive overhauls on equipment.

Check repairs or replace various standard components and subassemblies such as ball joints, brake lining, and other integral parts on the vehicle.

Clean and care for tools and equipment and shop facilities.

Inspect and determine the nature of routine motor vehicle malfunctions.

Employees in this classification are essential employees and are subject to being on call 24 hours a day as needed to maintain continuous operation. Employees must provide a phone number where they can be reached. In hazardous weather or highway conditions, employees may be called during off‑hours. Work may involve physical exertion outdoors or indoors, and may require moving objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Supervision is from a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Supervisor I or designated official. The current vacancy is located in Prince George’s County. The established list may be used to fill future vacancies at other MDTA facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

high school graduation or high school equivalency certificate.

Experience:

3 years servicing/maintaining/repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines or heavy‑duty construction equipment. One year of experience must include servicing heavy‑duty construction equipment and diesel engines.

Notes:

Applicants may substitute additional documented and relevant experience in automobile, truck, bus, or comparable equipment on a year‑for‑year basis for required education.

Completion of an accredited heavy equipment or diesel repair program may substitute 1.5 years of general experience.

U.S. Armed Forces military service experience may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis for education and experience.

Certification as an ASE Technician may substitute two years of required education.

Certification as an ASE Master Technician may substitute required education.

Licenses & Certifications

Class C motor‑vehicle operator’s license (valid in Maryland). Applicants must list licence number and expiration date.

Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) valid in Maryland during probationary period, depending on equipment operated. List licence number and expiration date.

Special Commercial Driver’s License endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles may be required.

Employees must satisfy first level of the adopting administration’s certification program during probationary period; failure to satisfy may be grounds for dismissal.

Employees new to the Maryland Aviation Administration must obtain an MAA Airfield Operators Permit per Code of Maryland Regulation 11.03.01.04.

Employees functioning as Commercial Vehicle Inspectors may need to obtain and maintain the Commercial Vehicle Inspector’s License.

Additional Information

Employees must be available for duty at hours, day or night, as required to maintain continuous operation.

Employees are subject to being on call 24 hours a day and must maintain reliable communication for emergency callbacks.

Employees exposed to hazardous materials may be required to undergo periodic medical testing and wear respirator.

Candidates subject to pre‑employment drug testing per Transportation Code regulations.

Employees subject to substance abuse testing per Transportation Code regulations.
