General Description Under immediate supervision of the Division Manager, perform a variety of non‑skilled and skilled work involved in the maintenance and repair of buildings and building systems, including carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical and HVAC.

Supervision Exercised

Level I: Exercises no supervision.

Level II: May exercise technical and functional supervision over Level I specialists.

Level III: May exercise technical and functional supervision over Levels I and II specialists.

Important & Essential Duties

Operate a City vehicle daily to travel to various city buildings for repairs and service (water treatment plants, pump stations, storage tanks, radio towers, etc.).

Perform general plumbing repairs to cold and hot water systems.

Operate an auger type sewer clean‑out machine and unclog sewer and sink lines as necessary.

Construct and build cabinets, shelves, and counters; remodel by moving/building walls and installing flooring and ceiling tile.

Operate table‑mounted saws, drill press, grinder, and cordless hand tools.

Perform minor carpentrywork, glass replacement, and locksmith work.

Assist others in carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, data cabling, and HVAC work.

Obtain cost information and estimates for materials and supplies.

Communicate with customers and supervision about issues, repairs, etc.

Other Job Related Duties Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Plumbing knowledge to address leaks, clogs, or other drainage problems.

Standard practices, processes, materials, and tools of the carpentry/plumbing trade.

Principles, practices, materials, processes, and tools involved in carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC trade.

Principles and practices of general commercial maintenance.

Locksmith maintenance and repair of door hardware, rekeying/repining of locks, and operation of key cutting machines.

Ability to learn to operate and maintain a variety of tools and equipment including saws, routers, drill presses, arc welders, cutting torches, and metal saws.

Safe operation of motor vehicles and office equipment (computer, work‑order software).

Follow and carry out proper safety procedures; climb ladders up to 24 ft.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with internal and external contacts.

Lead and manage a team for Level II and III positions, maintaining the same values and mission focus.

Experience and Training Guidelines For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training may qualify.

Level I:

Entry level; one (1) year of experience in carpentry, plumbing, and general commercial building maintenance repairs preferred.

Level II:

Three (3) years of experience in carpentry, plumbing, changing lights/ballast, and general commercial building maintenance repairs required.

Level III:

Five (5) years of experience in carpentry, plumbing and general commercial building maintenance repairs required.

High school diploma or GED required.

Level III: Locksmith certification or Journeyman plumbing license required.

Valid Texas driver’s license required.

Apprenticeship through TDLR for electrical or plumbing preferred.

EPA universal 608 preferred.

Special Requirements

Obtain a Security Clearance from the Abilene Police Department (APD) to work in their buildings.

Pass a Federal Government (FBI/Homeland Security) background check for FAA/Abilene Regional Airport properties and maintain those clearances while employed.

Physical Demands

Heavy – lifting no more than 100 lbs; carrying up to 50 lbs.
