Join Walnut Valley Water District as a Utility Service Worker I to maintain our water service system. This entry-level role involves routine maintenance, installation, and repair under close supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist with repair of meter services (gate valves, meter connections, etc.).
Assist with installations, maintenance, and repairs on water distribution systems and lines.
Clean dead‑end lines, discharge water until no odor, taste, or color.
Install or repair domestic and recycled water distribution mains, service lines, fire hydrants, valves, and meters.
Perform leak tests to locate leaks in service lines.
Shut down main lines in emergencies.
Maintain vegetation around meter services, fire hydrants, etc.
Participate in meter installation, turn‑ons, turn‑offs, sealing services, and removal of meters.
Notify customers of interruption of water service.
Investigate and resolve customer inquiries and complaints related to water charges, pressure, quality, and system malfunctions.
Read residential and commercial water meters on an assigned route using computer/electronic equipment.
Report high or low readings, meter leaks, damage, or illegal connections.
Replace broken meter lids, covers, and boxes.
Physical Requirements
Operate District vehicles.
Carry, push, pull, reach, and lift equipment and parts weighing up to 50 lbs.
Excavate with a shovel.
Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb during field maintenance.
Work in environments with dust, mud, and temperature changes.
Walk on uneven terrain outdoors.
Communicate orally with employees, contractors, and customers.
Use two‑way radio.
Stand and walk for extended periods.
Have adequate hearing, vision, eye‑hand coordination, and awareness for operation of equipment.
Requirements and Knowledge
Basic knowledge of materials and equipment for water service installation, maintenance, repair.
Basic principles of water meters.
Proper use of tools, materials, and equipment.
Basic mathematics.
Record keeping.
Local street names, locations, geography.
Work safety standards.
Skills and Abilities
Perform basic work assignments in installation, maintenance, repair.
Read water meters and maintain accurate records.
Perform basic maintenance on meters.
Learn more advanced water service work.
Interpret oral and written communications.
Maintain accurate records and reports.
Communicate diplomatically with employees and public.
Establish cooperative working relationships.
Perform arithmetic calculations.
Perform heavy physical labor.
Safely operate motor vehicles and power‑driven equipment.
Operating a backhoe is desirable.
Education and Experience
High school graduation or equivalent.
Up to one year of experience in meter reading, water system operation and maintenance, and/or customer service.
State of California SWRCB Water Distribution Operator Grade D1 Certificate required.
State of California SWRCB Water Treatment Operator Grade T1 Certificate desired.
Special Requirements
Pass pre‑employment physical, including pulmonary function test.
Pass periodic medical re‑evaluations for respirator use and be clean‑shaven when wearing a respirator.
Valid California Driver’s License – Class “C.” Maintain acceptable driving record.
Reliable telephone in service at all times.
Reliable personal transportation.
Reside within 30 miles of the District and be able to respond in a timely manner.
