Under general supervision; operates a variety of communication equipment in the dissemination of information to law enforcement/emergency medical personnel; performs related work as required.

Responsibilities

Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location in order to perform assigned tasks.

Operates communication equipment (PBX system, radio and telephone console) to receive and dispatch emergency information and/or emergency medical personnel.

Types various forms and reports.

Maintains log of telephone and radio calls received/transmitted.

Maintain knowledge of standard sheriff's office practices and procedures.

Other duties as assigned.

Supervision is received from Director of the Consolidated Communications Center, or other designated supervisor.

No functional and administrative supervision is exercised over support staff.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.

Minimum six (6) months related experience preferred.

Must be able to type 30 wpm with accuracy and proficiency. Employee is regularly required to sit and use hands and fingers to type.

Ability to pass an online dispatcher entrance exam.

Ability to acquire and maintain certification on the NCIC/CJIS criminal history information system is a condition of continued employment. Failure to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire date and successfully re-certify every two (2) years shall be grounds for termination.

Must complete Control Terminal Agency Training mandated by the National Crime Information Center within six (6) months after date of employment within the Consolidated Communications Center.

Must complete Iowa system certification for full access use within six (6) months after date of employment within the Consolidated Communications Center.

Ability to pass a background investigation as required by Iowa Code section 661-8.104(3) prior to employment.

Knowledge and previous experience operating a CRT and teletype system preferred.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to speak in a clear, concise and distinct voice are required.

Ability to think and respond promptly during tense and stressful situations.

Ability to record information in a given sequence.

Ability to read and write English accurately.

Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality regarding all aspects of the job.

Must have the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and management.

Ability to deal effectively with associates and the general public.

Must be proficient in computer software applications.
