Senior Outpatient Coder
At Houston Methodist, the Senior Outpatient Coder is responsible for ensuring diagnostic and procedure codes are assigned accurately to day surgery and observation encounters based on documentation within the electronic medical record while maintaining compliance with established rules and regulatory guidelines.

Qualifications
Associate’s or higher degree in a Council on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management accredited program or additional two years of experience in lieu of a degree.
Three years of relevant outpatient coding experience or successful completion of the Houston Methodist Senior Outpatient Coder Transition Program.
Must hold one of the following certifications: RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, CPC.
Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
Knowledge of coding classification systems, DRG and APC systems, official coding guidelines and coding compliance.
Knowledge of electronic medical record and imaging systems.
Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
Proficiency with electronic encoder application and common office software.
Responsibilities
Assign diagnostic and procedural codes to encounters of high complexity.
Maintain and achieve departmental standards of coding quality by assigning accurate ICD‑10‑CM/ICD‑10‑PCS and CPT codes and APC assignment using an electronic encoder application.
Ensure abstracting quality by reviewing discharge dispositions and correcting as necessary.
Review medical record documentation and abstract data into the encoder and EHR to determine principal or final diagnosis, co‑morbidity conditions, complications, secondary conditions and procedures.
Respond promptly to internal and external customer requests and initiate queries with physicians for clarification.
Utilize time effectively to meet productivity and accuracy targets and support accounts receivables goals.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and provide feedback during coding meetings and education sessions.
Essential Functions

Provide feedback during coding section meetings and education sessions.
Maintain ethical coding standards per AHIMA and official guidelines.
Support departmental coding timeframes and productivity standards.
Critically evaluate performance and seek improvement opportunities.

Travel may be required within and outside the Houston Metropolitan area.
