Job Summary Under administrative supervision by the Department Manager and clinical supervision by department physicians and advanced practice providers, assists providers with routine procedures including applying casts, splints, bandages, durable medical equipment, and supporting orthopedic surgical procedures. Produces written instructions for patients regarding device use and maintains supplies and equipment.

Essential Responsibilities

Applying all types of casts, splints, braces, bandages, slings, or other orthopedic devices, ensuring proper positioning, angulation, and selection per provider instructions and established protocols.

Attending follow‑up visits to check casts, splints and other devices.

Coordinating cast room activities with other clinic functions.

Evaluating new items such as plaster and ready‑made braces for compliance with standards.

Training and orienting newly hired orthopedic technicians and serving as a preceptor and resource for other staff.

Removing casts, splints, and orthopedic devices.

Addressing comfort and circulation issues, trimming, removing and reapplying casts and splints as ordered.

Fitting and instructing patients in the use of crutches, canes, and other devices; documenting charges on standard forms.

Preparing patients for procedures.

Setting up instruments and equipment for procedures.

Applying and removing bandages and dressings that do not involve debridement.

Providing pre‑printed written instructions for cast care and proper device use.

Removing sutures or staples from superficial incisions after assessment by an RN or provider.

Assisting patients with ambulation and transfers.

Collecting and recording patient data including height, weight, temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and basic condition information; addressing care gaps triggered in Health Connect per departmental workflow.

Recording patient care services in the medical record.

Maintaining operational readiness of equipment and supplies.

Preparing patients for exams by reviewing history, collecting current information and vital signs, and documenting in the medical record per guidelines.

Providing interventions ordered by the practitioner (e.g., medication, dressings, specimen collection, irrigations, suture removals, and IVs) and documenting patient response.

Ordering radiology tests using departmental standing orders under practitioner direction; communicating ordered tests to patients, family, and referring practitioners.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum three (3) years of orthopedic technologist experience, including casting, splint fabrication, and dispensing durable medical equipment.

Education

Graduate of an accredited Orthopedic Technician program or equivalent military training within the last three (3) years.

High School Diploma or GED required.

License, Certification, Registration

Orthopedic Technologist Certificate from the National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists or Registered Orthopedic Technologist Certification from the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals.

Basic Life Support required at hire.

Additional Requirements

Demonstrated knowledge and application of basic human anatomy, fracture types, orthopedic equipment, and cast and splint use.

Demonstrated proficiency with cast application, traction, and orthopedic appliance application.

Proficiency with surgical orthopedic and sterile techniques.

Excellent customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum five (5) years of orthopedic technologist experience.
