The
Fleet Mechanic
is responsible for performing preventative maintenance and repairs on a wide range of authority‑owned and leased equipment. This includes passenger vehicles; light, medium, and heavy‑duty trucks and trailers; off‑road construction and specialty equipment; commercial mowing equipment; and small engines. The role also supports mechanical, hydrostatic, and pneumatic power transmission systems, as well as firefighting and pavement maintenance equipment. Duties include ordering and securing parts, operating a variety of tools and machinery, and coordinating repair schedules, appointments, and equipment downtime with internal departments to ensure efficient operations. Responsibilities:
Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment, fleet vehicles, small equipment, and lawn care machinery, identifying issues such as wiring or hose defects, metal fatigue, and fluid leaks. Prepare heavy equipment for winter operations and maintain equipment used for season mowing. Conduct hands‑on quality control within the fleet maintenance facility to ensure all work meets performance and safety standards. Stay current on evolving technologies through ongoing training and professional development; provide training and troubleshooting support to team members on small engine repairs and maintenance. Assist in obtaining quotes for new vehicles and equipment; order parts and manage inventory levels. Maintain clean and organized shop and work areas; operate cleaning equipment and ensure proper cleanup of spills. Perform onsite repairs and maintenance for fleet assets at Downtown Island Airport (Knoxville). Respond to on‑call service requests and plan ahead for necessary tools, equipment, and materials to complete repairs efficiently and safely. Perform other duties as assigned to support department operations.
