Job Description Facility Operations Assistants perform a variety of routine unskilled and semi‑skilled manual tasks related to the operation and maintenance of state‑owned buildings and facilities, the surrounding grounds, and the vehicles and equipment used in maintaining these sites.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Facility Operations Assistant 1 is an entry‑level position that performs a combination of maintenance, grounds, laborer, parking services, custodial duties, and operates motor vehicles under the general direction of a Facility Operations Assistant 2.
Office‑related activities include filing, alphabetizing, photocopying, sorting, delivering mail, and storing records or supplies on shelves, bins, or floor spaces.
Visitors are provided with information regarding tourist attractions, office locations, and facility rules and regulations.
Inspections, checks, and patrols detect vandalism or non‑adherence to safety procedures; defects, hazards, or potentially dangerous conditions are reported.
General grounds maintenance tasks such as clearing sites, raking or tilling soil, mowing lawns, applying fertilizers and pesticides, cutting brush and wood, trimming and removing trees and shrubs, maintaining roads and sidewalks, and removing snow, trash, and obstructions are performed; debris, dirt, and other materials are loaded onto trucks.
Conference and event support includes setting up chairs, podiums, and related equipment, and loading, unloading, and assembling furniture and equipment.
Trades assistance involves carrying supplies and equipment, erecting ladders and scaffolding, cleaning, flushing and repairing gutters and drains, removing construction site materials, preparing surfaces, and spreading paint; digging ditches, loading and unloading trucks, carrying bricks and mortar, performing rough carpentry and masonry work, and cleaning the work site after repair work is completed.
Self‑propelled and motorized equipment such as lawn mowers, pumps, compressors, vehicles, small trucks, and light construction equipment are operated, and automotive and other mechanics are assisted with routine and unskilled tasks in maintaining automotive equipment and machinery such as mounting and dismounting snowplows, salt spreaders, engines, transmissions, differential work, minor engine tune‑ups, changing oil, tires, batteries, and cleaning and polishing vehicles.
Building and facility cleaning includes vacuuming, mopping, waxing floors; emptying trash receptacles; washing lavatories and fixtures; dusting and polishing wood and metal fixtures.
Routine building maintenance tasks such as unclogging toilets and sinks and changing light bulbs and tubes are performed.
Parking duties include collecting fees and tickets for parking and special events and preparing reports of revenue and tickets collected and issued; directing patrons to designated parking areas and controlling access to parking areas based on permits and suspensions.
Volunteer, student, and inmate work crews may be led, assignments made, equipment and supplies distributed, and on‑site performance supervised.
Travel to other offices within the state or facility for pickup or moving equipment, supplies, or persons may be required.
Heavy supply, furniture, equipment, and office equipment moves, loading and unloading from trucks, rail cars, and forklift operations, and storage area maintenance are performed.
Delivery vehicles may be driven by the incumbent.
Office moves, conferences, meetings, and special event furniture, partitions, and equipment set‑up and removal are performed, and forms and supplies are delivered to various offices.
Receiving and shipping of various office materials is assisted.
Job Requirements Minimum Qualifications
Labor Class: No education or experience qualifications for this class.
Applicants must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and understand and carry out written or oral instructions.
When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated.
Additional Information The hiring rate for this position is $36,323
