Job Summary

This position is responsible for the ongoing maintenance of all traffic signals and control devices, street stripping program, painting street curbs, crosswalks, slow bars, parking lots and center lanes, and traffic signage including fabrication and purchase of materials. The incumbent will be the lead for their division, overseeing three laborers. They will ensure proper installation of street signs throughout the city, report locations where street signs are needed, and prepare materials to assemble street signs and stop signs. The incumbent will also oversee traffic control for all special events such as Alfresco, Weslaco Parade, Onion Fest, etc. They may be required to work extended hours due to special events and/or natural disasters, and will be required to be on‑call.

Essential Job Functions

Maintain regular and prompt attendance; physically present to work.

Ensure proper operation of traffic light system/school zone lights and timer programming while operating bucket truck.

Responsible for maintenance, installation and replacement of all traffic signs.

Stripes school crossings and streets within the City; repairs and maintains the striping machines.

Maintain proper visibility of traffic signs and trim trees/bushes as needed.

Responsible for traffic control during special events and assists other department/division as needed.

Maintain inventory of traffic signage materials.

Acquire quotes and requisitions for processing purchase orders.

Review traffic plans for special events.

Attend training sessions as required to remain abreast of updates or changes in occupational safety requirements.

May be assigned other duties in addition to those listed; duties may change according to the changing needs of the city.

Act as the lead for the division, provide training, schedule, and oversee three laborers in this division.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

One (1) to three (3) years of work‑related experience to perform the job.

IMSA Level I Traffic Signal Field Technician Certification or must be able to acquire within one year of employment.

Applicants must pass pre‑employment criminal background check and drug screen at the City's expense.

Must have current valid Class "C" Texas Driver License and be insurable.

Must successfully complete Emergency Management and Incident Command Training.

Bilingual English/Spanish, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Knowledge of safe and effective operations of equipment and machinery for Public Works Department operations.

Knowledge of practices, methods, equipment and materials used in the day‑to‑day maintenance, installation, and repair of traffic signals.

Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety precautions, practices, procedures and regulations, traffic control signing and striping operations.

Ability to make good judgment when making decisions regarding regular job duties.

Ability to read and interpret instructions regarding the safe and efficient use of equipment and related materials.

Ability to recognize unsafe working conditions to ensure that appropriate safety precautions are taken to ensure employee safety.

Ability to recruit, train and supervise subordinate personnel effectively.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and make sound decisions.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands

Work requires moderate intermittent physical strength and effort daily. Work includes lifting, moving, and positioning/loading heavy objects (up to 100 lbs.), pulling, pushing, remaining stationary or moving about for the full workday, and driving in adverse weather or challenging road conditions may be required.

May perform work under extreme weather conditions for long periods of time.

Duties may involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination. Examples include operating a motor vehicle, operating a personal computer or ascending/descending a ladder.
