Steam Distribution Maintenance Technician
This position will serve as a journey level mechanical maintenance technician for the Steam Distribution group, requiring intermediate to advanced mechanical, electrical, operational and safety/hazard knowledge and awareness of steam distribution and hot water distribution systems, equipment, and associated components. The systems are highly complex, and the technician will assist maintenance personnel and outside contractors with day‑to‑day activities, work independently when needed, and may fill in as a Power‑Plant Technician once fully trained.
Responsibilities
Assist maintenance personnel and outside contractors in daily activities, working independently as required.
Perform routine and preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairs, and replacements on steam and hot water distribution systems and their components, including piping, expansion joints, condensate return units, pumps, motors, metering devices, trap assemblies, supply/exhaust fans, pneumatic systems, and electrical control systems.
Support predictive maintenance programs by obtaining meter readings, steam and condensate samples, and using test devices to take readings.
Apply intermediate knowledge of tools such as cutting torches, lathes, drill presses, welding machines, grinders, saws, micrometers, infrared meters, wrenches, pipe threaders, and measuring devices.
Maintain computer proficiency, using the computerized time‑management system (TIMS), maintenance management system (MAXIMO), and meeting training/compliance targets.
Serve on an on‑call rotation once fully trained.
Perform emergency duty and comply with communicable disease requirements, reporting to work during adverse weather or other university emergencies (e.g., pandemic).
Qualifications
Intermediate to advanced mechanical skills, electrical knowledge, and operational and safety/hazard awareness.
Experience with steam distribution and hot water distribution systems and related components.
Intermediate proficiency with cutting torches, lathes, drill presses, welding machines, grinders, saws, micrometers, infrared meters, wrenches, pipe threaders, and measuring devices.
Intermediate computer skills, including TIMS and MAXIMO.
Ability to work independently or assist others, and to serve in on‑call and emergency duty capacities.
