1st Class Drydock Mechanic (Job ID: 1167) Colonna’s Shipyard is seeking a 1st Class Drydock Mechanic to support drydock operations in Norfolk, VA. This role involves direct hands‑on work in building dock operations, ship support, and equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities

Accomplish all duties of a lower classman.

Block and haul vessels, splice three–strand ropes, and build keel and bilge blocks, cradles, and shoring for ships in dry dock, marine railways, shipways, or building docks.

Position and secure blocking in accordance with ship blueprints.

Use centering chains, lasers, oil sticks, and magnetic tapes.

Identify wood types (oak, pine, salt‑treated, composite) and rope types (nylon, Samson, single‑braided, double‑braided, synthetic, manila).

Become proficient in drydock, railway, and travel‑lift line handling.

Moor vessels with various mooring equipment (cleats, bitts, bollard bitts, chocks, H‑bitt) under instruction.

Tie knots such as barge hitch and tow bridal.

Operate equipment: drydock equipment (capstan, grip hoist, flood valves, discharge valves), forklifts, impact wrench, nail gun, industrial planer, winches, JLGs, small boats, oil booms, moving floats, Yokohama cranes.

Perform basic chainsaw operation (startup, blade change, maintenance).

Train on emergency procedures related to drydocks, railways, and travel lift.

Complete maintenance tasks on dry docks and railways.

Locate stern reference points (SRP) and execute introductory blueprint reading skills.

Read offsets and track watch tables, guide travel lift onto/off pier, and work with grade beams.

Assist in hooking tugs to vessels as a deckhand.

Identify piers and berthing locations within the shipyard.

Adhere to safety policy and use required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, steel‑toe boots/shoes, respirator when necessary).

Qualifications

24/7 availability.

At least five (5) years of maritime experience in trade.

Some technical training.

Knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the mechanic role.

Effective teamwork and independent work skills.

Reliable attendance.

Ability to comprehend and follow complex instructions.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to obtain DBIDS.

Experience operating small boats, JLG, chainsaws, and industrial planers.

Welding/fitting experience.

Security Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required.

Travel Requirements

Minimal travel; 10% or less.

Physical Requirements

Lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment; minimum 20 lbs.

Perform tasks in extreme temperatures, aboard ships, in shipyards, and in confined spaces.

Ride ships at sea for extended periods.

Perform duties involving high heat, humidity, noise, dirty conditions, aloft work, and moving through manholes.

Frequent respirator use; wear protective clothing, face shields, or goggles when welding or cutting.

Stand, walk, sit, reach, climb, balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist, and crawl as required.

Operate trucks, forklifts, and man‑lifts.
