Maintenance Worker/Senior Maintenance Worker – Parks, Recreation, and Culture County of Volusia is seeking a Maintenance Worker/Senior Maintenance Worker for the Parks, Recreation & Culture Division. The position is located at Barkley Square Park in DeLand, FL and involves limited semi‑skilled manual labor, including cleaning brush from park grounds and roadside, blowing and sweeping walkways, removing refuse and paper from grounds, cutting and trimming lawns, bushes and trees, and cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, pavilions and park facilities.

The preferred candidate, having met the minimum requirements, will have at least one (1) year of experience in park maintenance, operating commercial lawn maintenance equipment, and facility maintenance experience.

Illustrative Duties Maintenance Worker

Operates chainsaws and brush cutters in ditch maintenance, right‑of‑way clearing, and grounds keeping, commercial mowers and landscape equipment.

Operates vehicle‑mounted and portable spray equipment.

Assists with application, storage, mixing and loading of herbicides and insecticides; sprays surface water problems for mosquito larvae control; sprays herbicides for control of aquatic and ditch bank weeds.

Assists in performing field maintenance and service work on equipment; also assists in shop maintenance in a laboring capacity under supervision.

Operates equipment such as blowers, sweepers, commercial mowers, lawnmowers, edgers, pressure washers, etc.

Clears brush from roadside and ditches, sweeps walkways, removes refuse and paper from grounds, cuts, trims, waters, and fertilizes lawns and bushes.

Loads and unloads heavy materials from trucks and vans; moves and assists with moving furniture, equipment, and/or large and bulky objects.

Maintains mosquito‑control ditches with hand tools including shovels and rakes.

Assists with storage, mixing and loading of herbicides and insecticides.

Performs scheduled housekeeping duties throughout the facility and area grounds; may be required to move furniture.

Performs minor repairs under close supervision, such as changing lights and unblocking toilets.

Washes and cleans vehicles and equipment as required.

Keeps restrooms and locker rooms supplied with necessary paper, soap, and towels.

Cleans and sanitizes park restrooms and shower areas.

Picks up and delivers parts and supplies as directed.

Adheres to federal, state, county, and local ordinances.

Responds to emergency situations.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Senior Maintenance Worker

Performs work of a Park Maintenance Worker.

Operates commercial power mowers, chainsaws, circular saws, reciprocating saws, brush cutter, edger, clippers, power washers, ATVs, litter vacuum, and other equipment used in landscaping, park and roadside maintenance, and right‑of‑way cleaning.

May operate and maintain a Freon removal machine.

Operates various types of equipment including trucks, tractors, skid steers, forklifts, dump trucks, etc.

May assist equipment operators in laying out work and in maintenance of machines.

Assists repair technicians and journeymen in duties; assists in performing field maintenance and service work on equipment operated.

Assists with application, storage, mixing and loading of herbicides and insecticides.

Assists trades and project workers in brick laying, pipe laying, painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, roofing and other construction tasks.

May perform work such as venue set‑up for meetings, classroom training, theater, presentations, or banquets; sets up audio/visual equipment and operates the same, if necessary; connects sound equipment and sets appropriate volume levels; connects and operates lighting systems and sets dimmer systems to complement client events; installs event‑specific equipment such as basketball courts and goals, dance floor, staging, risers, ice rink, hockey goals and glass, lighting trusses, etc.

Reads and utilizes event work orders and floor plans to set up/take down events.

May serve as a lead worker on a small work crew.

Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.

Responds to emergency situations.

May be assigned to other locations based upon operational need.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Adheres to federal, state, county, and local ordinances.

Minimum Requirements Maintenance Worker:

Starting $16.15/hour High School diploma or GED and one (1) year of experience in construction and/or general maintenance work.

Senior Maintenance Worker:

Starting $17.22/hour High School diploma or GED and either one (1) year of experience as a Maintenance Worker or two (2) years of experience in construction and/or general maintenance work.

A comparable amount of education and training may be substituted for the required experience. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License. Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required, depending on position assignment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Maintenance Worker

Depend on assignment: Ability to perform routine unskilled and limited semi‑skilled manual work.

Read and write English.

Follow oral instructions.

Know basic tools used in maintenance and construction work.

Understand occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to laboring work.

Safely operate chainsaws, brush cutters, blowers, sweepers, commercial mowers and other assigned equipment without assistance.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Perform heavy manual labor, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.

Work without direct supervision.

Fill out daily work sheets.

Safely operate pick‑up truck and small trailer and securely load cargo.

Safely tow and back a trailer.

Senior Maintenance Worker

Depend on assignment: All knowledge, skills and abilities of lower levels of Maintenance Workers.

Know equipment used in maintenance, grounds keeping, and construction.

Know occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to safe operation of equipment.

Fill out daily work sheets and other required forms.

Operate light trucks, trailers, small tractors, mowers and similar automotive equipment.

Operate forklifts, scissor lifts (elevated platforms), ride‑on floor maintenance equipment.

Safely tow and back a trailer.

Interact effectively with others.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Work under stressful conditions.

ADA Requirements Physical Demands: Ability to see, talk, and hear. Visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and other equipment. Peripheral vision. Ability to pull, push, lift, carry 50–80 pounds, grasp, handle, climb, balance, reach overhead, bend and stoop. Ability to traverse uneven, wet or broken terrain.

Environmental Demands: Inside and outside work. Ability to tolerate inclement weather, including but not limited to heat, humidity, wind and cold. May require exposure to chemicals, dust, insects, noise, fumes, and confined spaces.

Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend safety instructions, procedures, floor plans, memos, and directions. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information. Ability to perform basic math such as addition and subtraction.
