Job Overview The RN Shift Supervisor is responsible for coordinating and overseeing nursing activities and ensuring appropriate nursing staff coverage during the assigned shift. The supervisor serves as the point‑of‑contact for other interdisciplinary staff for coordination of nursing services for the assigned areas or the SSLC as a whole, specific to SSLC needs. The role includes responding to emergency situations, providing assessment, ensuring safety and care of individuals and staff, performing complex nursing work, evaluating and documenting healthcare needs, and maintaining professional relationships with facility and outside agency employees.

Responsibilities • Coordinate and oversee nursing activities and staffing during the assigned shift. • Serve as point‑of‑contact for interdisciplinary staff and coordinate nursing services. • Respond to emergency situations, conduct assessments, and ensure safety and care of individuals and staff. • Provide complex nursing care, including comprehensive assessments, health screenings, and treatments. • Evaluate and document healthcare needs and report issues to appropriate personnel. • Oversee, coach, and delegate work to nursing staff including direct care RNs and LVNs. • Assist with nursing instruction, training, and serve as a resource for other nurses. • Report personnel issues to the nurse manager and provide input into staff evaluations. • Develop and present information for in‑service training or staff development. • Communicate with physicians, primary care practitioners, administration, and nursing staff to ensure optimal care. • Notify higher‑level staff of trends and concerns. • Maintain professional relationships and remain current with policies, procedures, and regulations. • Perform additional assignments as instructed and work under general supervision of the nurse manager or designated supervisor.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs) • Attend work on a regular basis and adhere to a shifting schedule or, at times, a rotating schedule, extended shift, and/or overtime. • Serve in an on‑call status on a rotating schedule as required. • Ensure appropriate nursing staff coverage for assigned area, adjusting assignments based on call‑ins. • Delegate work assignments to nursing staff within the assigned area and report significant coverage issues. • Respond to calls for assistance from staff and coordinate additional services as needed. • Perform complex nursing assessments and treatments campus‑wide, including technical procedures such as tracheostomy care, gastrostomy/jejunostomy care, wound care, breathing treatments, and administering medications. • Provide teaching and training to staff and individuals, observe and provide feedback to nurses. • Respond to emergency situations, perform CPR, suctioning, and administer emergency medications. • Perform related work as assigned, serve as resource/mentor, cross‑train other RNs. • Participate in competency‑based training and continuing education to maintain competence. • Comply with state mandated continuing education and all safety and infection control practices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of nursing techniques, standards, and procedures; health care laws and regulations; medical diagnoses and procedures; community health and nursing care principles; utilization review and control measures.

Knowledge of state and federal laws and Intermediate Care Facility rules; nursing care standards; settlement agreements; healthcare guidelines.

Knowledge of infectious diseases, infection prevention and control principles, and associated regulations.

Skills in using computers, software, and electronic health record systems.

Skill in the care and treatment of patients.

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.

Initial Screening Criteria • At least one (1) year experience as a practicing registered nurse is required. • At least two (2) years of experience as a practicing registered nurse in a health agency, hospital, or health‑care facility is preferred. • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred. • Previous experience working with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) is preferred.

Additional Information • Nursing supervisory experience is preferred. • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including the CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). • Males between ages 18 – 25 must be registered with the Selective Service. • All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to random drug testing. • Flexibility in work hours may be required; must be willing to work overtime, extended hours, weekends and holidays. • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state‑operated facility.
