U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provides a pay range of $37,193.00/yr to $47,334.00/yr. The actual pay will be based on your skills and experience – talk with your recruiter to learn more.
Summary The Pathways Internship Program allows students to join VA in career positions that emphasize long‑term training and development. As a Student Trainee (Medical and Health) the incumbent performs duties of a medical laboratory aide in the clinical laboratory of the Harry S. Truman Veterans Affairs Medical Center, drawing routine specimens during high workload times, late clinic hours, and short staff coverage.
Qualifications
Applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, full or half‑time, and relevant to this position.
Must be able to work at least 4 hours per week.
For GS‑4 grade level: completion of 2 academic years of post‑high‑school study or an associate’s degree (60 semester hours/90 quarter hours). Transcripts required.
Maintain status as a current student and at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.
Provide proof of enrollment and transcripts at the end of each academic period or upon request.
Adhere to the established work schedule approved by the supervisor.
Observe all workplace rules, including dress code, office conduct, and behavior.
Participate in all VA mandatory training programs (online or classroom).
Notify the supervisor of any changes in completion of the educational program.
Perform the duties and responsibilities in the assigned position description.
Meet the grade qualifications prior to the start date.
Sign a Pathways Internship Program Participant Agreement.
Credit will be given for applicable paid, unpaid, and volunteer experience that relates to the duties.
Duties
Perform phlebotomy duties on both inpatients and outpatients.
Utilize a personal computer to access patient medical information.
Use centrifuges and other laboratory equipment to process specimens after collection.
Sort, aliquot, and distribute specimens to laboratory and referral labs.
Act as courier to deliver specimens to UMHC laboratories and return pathology reports.
Measure, prepare preservatives, and aliquot specimens for surgical and cytology specimens.
Collect, preserve, and transport all 24‑hour urine collections.
Stock blood‑drawing and processing supplies.
Ensure printers in the receiving and blood‑drawing rooms function properly and replace paper, labels, and ribbons.
Answer queries from physicians, nurses, and other staff regarding test requirements and order status.
Route calls to the proper laboratory section.
Work part‑time (not‑to‑exceed 1 year) with rotating weekends, holidays, and hours during school breaks.
Perform shifts from 5:30 am to midnight, adjusted for class schedules.
Other responsibilities as directed by supervisor.
