Wayne State University, a premier public urban research university in Detroit, Michigan, is seeking an experienced Academic Services Officer I/II – College Success Coach for its Detroit campus. The position focuses on supporting and retaining first‑year and early‑transition students through the Warrior 360 (W360) comprehensive student support model.
Essential Functions
Monitor and report student progress using university tracking and reporting systems.
Engage students in discussions and goal setting from initial preparedness through career planning.
Provide support via university systems, face‑to‑face sessions, small groups, or events as appropriate.
Assist with departmental outreach, including informational sessions, recruitment, and new‑student orientation.
Partner with unit leadership to design and execute tailored retention efforts for the assigned student group.
Communicate W360’s academic and non‑academic requirements, policies, and procedures accurately.
Participate in unit and university committees; serve as liaison between W360 and other units.
Collaborate with academic advisors to encourage regular advising engagement.
Maintain professional boundaries and adhere to ethical campus conduct policies.
Prepare written/oral weekly and semesterly reports.
Continuously develop knowledge of best practices, policies, procedures, and technology relevant to program needs.
Perform duties assigned by the Sr. Director and Associate Director(s).
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Guidance Counseling, Psychology or related field.
Master’s degree required for Academic Services Officer II.
Experience working with diverse and underrepresented student populations.
Strong rapport‑building skills with students, staff, faculty, parents, and community partners.
Demonstrated ability to work with students of varying academic preparedness.
Computer literacy.
Ability to plan and manage small‑scale academic programming/projects.
Availability for evening and weekend hours as needed.
Ability to work independently and in collaboration with experienced colleagues.
Preferred Qualifications Experience supporting students through intervention, academic recovery, and persistence.
