Per Diem Materials Handler

As an academic medical center with a rich history of providing life‑saving treatment in Southern Nevada, UMC serves as the anchor hospital of the Las Vegas Medical District, offering Nevada’s highest level of care to promote successful medical outcomes for patients.

We host Nevada’s only Level I Trauma Center, Designated Pediatric Trauma Center, Burn Care Center, and Transplant Center. UMC is a Pathway Designated facility by ANCC and is on its journey to Magnet status.

Position Summary Under general supervision, the materials handler receives, stores, issues, and maintains inventory of materials, supplies, parts, tools, and equipment used in the hospital and ambulatory clinics.

Responsibilities include loading, unloading, and delivering materials and supplies to appropriate departments or required locations.

The candidate may be in charge of a specialized stockroom located on clinical floors, responsible for receiving, checking merchandise, performing inventories, replenishing supplies, and establishing stock levels.

Job Requirements Education / Experience High school graduate and at least two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in warehouse receiving, ordering, stock clerk, and inventory roles.

Licensing / Certification Requirements Some positions in this classification may require a current forklift certification.

Additional Position Requirements Recent (within past 5 years) documented material handling/warehouse experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.

Must be available to work day and swing shifts, seven (7) days a week, as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Methods and practices of storing and issuing materials, tools, equipment, and supplies; inventory control record keeping; units of weights and measures and standard terminology; knowledge of suppliers; knowledge of medical supplies and brand names; principles and practices of infection control and equipment disinfection; competency with personal computers and associated software applications; use and maintenance of tools related to the work; business arithmetic; record‑keeping principles and practice; department and hospital safety practices; handling and disposal of hazardous materials; infection control policies; emergency response policies; patient rights.

Skills Perform accurate storage and issuance of materials, supplies, and equipment; maintain accurate inventory control records; safely use and maintain hand and power tools and material‑handling equipment; use proper handling procedures for contaminated equipment; demonstrate accurate arithmetic calculations; use computers and related software applications; communicate with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; establish and maintain effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; effectively and safely use equipment.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Mobility in a typical stores or warehouse setting, operation of standard office equipment; stamina to stand and/or walk for extended periods; strength to lift and maneuver equipment and materials weighing up to 100 pounds with proper equipment; vision to read printed materials including a VDT screen; hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone; mobility to safely operate a motor vehicle and/or material‑handling equipment including a forklift (if required). Strength and agility to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
