Under general supervision from the Recreation Program Supervisor performs semiskilled duties in planning, developing, coordinating, implementing, and overseeing recreation and athletic programs for Pender County.

Assists with developing, coordinating, scheduling, implementing, and evaluating a variety of recreational programs, activities, special events, and facilities including adult athletics, summer camps, educational programs, and special events.

Assists with coordinating logistics for field and facility rentals, including but not limited to, providing tours and information to prospective renters and implementing details outlined in rental agreements. Acts as liaison to patrons, vendors, and participants to ensure events are properly executed with optimal satisfaction.

Prepares program materials, equipment, first aid kits and other necessary items.

Responds to public inquiries concerning programs.

Provides oversight and direction of assigned programs.

Ensures the safety of individuals and security of facilities; evaluates and takes appropriate action to correct unusual situations including fights, thefts, vandalism, behavior problems, code violations, etc.

Provides information and assistance to users of the facility; educates patrons on rules and regulations.

Must possess technical knowledge of recreational games such as basketball, soccer, softball, baseball, etc.

Enforces rules and regulations, facility rules, etc. for use of the facility.

Monitors buildings, grounds, and equipment; reports needed repairs.

Maintains necessary inventory of equipment; distributes supplies and equipment; assists with ordering supplies and equipment for recreation and athletic programs.

Assists with public relation duties such as preparing and distributing flyers, press releases, and brochures.

Assists with preparing and administering individual program or facility budgets as appropriate, monitors expenditures.

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge of basic safety rules and regulations regarding use of the facility and equipment.

Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in various programs.

Ability to obtain knowledge of facility policy and procedures and keep records as needed.

Ability to interpret and explain rules and regulations regarding the use of the programs and facility.

Ability to be flexible and able to handle multiple tasks and conflicting priorities.

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms with a wide variety of ages, groups, and interests.

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships, exercising tact, courtesy, and firmness with community groups, volunteers, contracted staff, employees, other county departments, and the general public.

Ability to work independently, demonstrating assertiveness, self-motivation and decision‑making skills for both routine and emergency situations.

Minimum Education and Experiences Graduation from high school and demonstrated possession of knowledge, skills and abilities gained through at least six (6) months experience in public recreation or any equivalent combination of education or experience.

Special Requirement

Valid North Carolina Driver’s License

First Aid and CPR certification desired

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and frequently standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
