The Opportunity The Park District is currently recruiting for a
Sanitation Systems Maintenance Worker
located at the Park District’s South County Trades Yard in Castro Valley. The hiring pools established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancies and additional vacancies that may occur during the one-year life of the hiring pools.
What You’ll Be Doing Under general supervision, drives large sanitation pump‑out trucks on rounds throughout the regional parks and performs related site labor to collect and dispose of sewage from chemical toilets, tanks and septic tanks; and performs related duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a motivated, dependable team player with strong knowledge of sewage collection systems. They will have proven experience installing, maintaining, and repairing septic systems, holding tanks, and leach fields.
The successful applicant will safely and efficiently operate sanitation trucks and related heavy equipment, performing routine inspections, complying with applicable regulations, and maintaining awareness of vehicle limitations and site conditions. Additionally, this individual will also be proficient with digital tools for job execution, reporting, and documentation, along with clear and effective communication skills when working with coworkers, supervisors, and the public. Most importantly, they will have a strong commitment to safety, demonstrated through sound judgment and effective risk‑mitigation practices in all driving, equipment operation, and performing fieldwork in potentially hazardous environments.
Essential Functions
Drives on city streets, highways, maintained park roads, fire roads, and semi‑maintained park accesses to properly collect and dispose of sewage and garbage.
Cleans and stocks chemical toilets.
Locates broken and clogged sewer lines.
Repairs and rebuilds septic tanks and leach fields.
Assists in the installation of septic systems.
Ensures tank trucks are clean and in proper operating condition, including arranging for scheduled and emergency service.
Performs emergency repairs for in‑field breakdowns.
Maintains and develops records, tallies, and reports, including minor administrative work to document completed tasks.
Serves as lead worker to support position; and performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade;
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience operating a variety of large trucks.
License:
A valid California Class B driver's license, including the tanker and air brake endorsement is a condition of initial and continued employment in this classification.
Additional Information Knowledge Of
Sewage and garbage collection and disposal techniques;
Mechanical skills for safe operation of various pieces of equipment;
Sewer collection maintenance and techniques;
Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
Ability To
Safely drive large equipment under hazardous conditions; work independently in the absence of supervision;
Operate transmitter and locator equipment; operate a pipe camera to inspect sewers;
Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications;
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse general public, with a focus on quality service to internal staff and external customers and park users.
Conditions Of Employment
Must pass level 1 background check.
May be required to wear a Park District Uniform.
Work in cramped, enclosed places, sometimes in awkward positions and in sewage.
May be required to work unusual hours, nights, weekends, holidays and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
May be required to be on‑call on a scheduled basis and available for emergency response.

The probationary period for this classification is nine (9) months.
