General Description Performs highly complex (senior-level) work overseeing correctional staff who provide direct care to juveniles in a correctional residential facility. Responsibilities include overseeing daily operations, facilitating youth rehabilitation, supervising youth, and coaching personal development in accordance with individualized treatment plans. Provides supervision and direct care for youth, ensuring safety and security of youth and staff. Coaches and mentors other JCOs to teach appropriate methods and positive ways to work with youth. Works to help youth identify and manage stress and trauma, and to react in more socially appropriate ways. Uses appropriate intervention methods to aid in learning and correct behavior. Maintains safe environments and employs security measures when youth, staff, or others are in danger. Engages with youth to maintain structure while considering brain development in youth with complex trauma. Maintains healthy relationships and boundaries, recognizes progress and good choices, and may plan, assign, and supervise the work of others. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment. May work beyond 40 hours per week, be on-call, and travel occasionally. Pre-Service Training Academy may be required for new hires or rehires separated more than 18 months.
Essential Duties
Oversees campus movement, coordination between activities, and safety of staff and youth during shifts.
Responds to incidents using intervention methods to aid learning; prepares serious incident reports and collaborates with the Serious Incident Administrator (SIA) and the IRC.
Monitors facility for access to means to assist in suicidal behavior; observes youth on suicide alert and other youth to identify behaviors requiring intervention and a Suicide Assessment (SA).
Collaborates with the Regulation Safety Team (RST) to maintain campus security and ensure compliance with procedures and standards.
Engages in competency-based training in trauma-informed corrections and coaches other JCOs in Texas Model approaches.
Acts as coach and role model to other JCOs, supporting retention and development of newly hired staff.
Holds youth accountable in ways that fit the behavior and helps youth learn socially acceptable responses.
Gives attention to safety, uses good judgment, and applies higher levels of intervention when needed.
Helps youth identify responses to stress and teaches emotional self-regulation; supports other JCOs in using self-regulation techniques.
Gathers knowledge of each youth’s treatment plan and supports learning of skills to meet goals; coaches youth on resolving conflicts with peers and staff.
Participates in the Youth Service Team and contributes to treatment plans as a reliable team member.
