Under general supervision, this position leads, guides, directs and assigns commercial sanitation employees to daily duties and monitors operations throughout the day. Dispatches routes according to changes made by businesses as needed. Upon scheduled or nonscheduled absences of driver operators, this position will be required to drive a front end load (FEL) garbage truck. Requires a class B Commercial Drivers License. Reports to the Sanitation Superintendent.
Responsibilities
Leads, guides, directs, and delegates the work of commercial driver operators in coordinating daily work activities and operations.
Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work to implement the daily routes of Commercial Sanitation, in dispatching driver operators to provide the most efficient service to customers as needed and performs route audits to ensure safe and efficient procedures are followed to identify possible training needs.
Develops goals, documents performance, provides performance feedback, and formally evaluates the work of the employee; provides reward and recognition for proper and efficient performance.
Drives and operates FEL garbage trucks on designated routes and acts as a lead person to other employees while ensuring their safety.
Coordinates changes in business service with administrative staff.
Utilizes a wide variety of computer programs such as Google Workspace, Microsoft Word, GIS maps, GPS Fleet Tracker, on a daily basis to process, dispatch, complete, and document work orders; organize and assign different routes; look up addresses and distinguish city and county jurisdiction; monitor drivers/operators location and route completion; and communicate with various departments, citizens, and businesses.
Serves as a field representative for the Sanitation Department and responds effectively and courteously to customer inquiries, special requests, and complaints; and assists commercial sanitation crew by providing backup in performance of duties for absentee crew workers.
Receives and/or reviews information such as call tickets, written/spoken instructions, route schedule, maps, personnel info, and regulations. Prepares and generates information such as a log of addresses and can numbers and log of maintenance performed on trucks & route schedules.
Refers to call tickets, written/spoken instructions, route schedules, maps, personnel policy and related information and regulations and responds to driver’s reports of problem pickups, including unsafe conditions and/or potential hazards.
Responds to questions and complaints related to commercial sanitation operations and delivers dumpsters.
Interacts and communicates with a wide variety of groups and individuals to include the general public, fellow employees, office staff and landfill personnel, and provides information regarding schedules and updates of service, responds to public inquiries in a courteous and timely manner and provides needed information such as current and changing trash, recycling, yard debris and bulk routes and collection methods.
Additional Functions
Assists in coordinating with other departments during city-wide emergencies or special projects or situations to support core functions of the city. During emergencies, special projects or situations, may be required to be on call after city business hours.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injury or illnesses.
Education and Experience High School Diploma or its equivalent and three (3) years of experience in a job related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Qualifications Valid class B Commercial Drivers License is required.
