The purpose of this classification is to perform technical tasks at the supervisory level on an assigned shift, performing various construction, repair, maintenance, and operational activities in support of the Wastewater Department Collection system of the City of Alexandria. This position is subject to 24-hr call and responds to emergency calls during inclement weather or other emergencies.

Organizes, schedules, supervises, assigns, reviews and inspects operations, maintenance and construction activities of the wastewater collection system on an assigned shift. Supervises assigned crews on an assigned shift; instructs, assigns and reviews work, maintains standards, coordinates activities, allocates personnel and acts on employee problems; evaluates work processes and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers advice and assistance as needed.

Receives, reviews and responds to work orders; assigns projects and develops plans for completion of work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff, assists with complex/problem situations.

Monitors work in progress and ensures compliance with established standards; advises crews in techniques and practices; reviews reports; prepares requests for materials and supplies.

Provides input in the process of developing specifications for equipment and material procurement; assists in receiving, inspecting, sorting and issuing required parts and supplies; monitors use of supplies and inventory levels.

Receives and reviews timesheets, overtime reports and related documents. Receives, reviews, analyzes and responds to difficult customer complaints or problems.

Performs technical tasks in support of wastewater department operations; supervises collection system repairs; supervises the installation of sewer mains and taps; locates and prepares video of sewer lines; conducts mechanical repairs on pumps; troubleshoots electrical problems.

Utilizes various tools and equipment to perform required field work as needed; utilizes an amp meter and volt meter to troubleshoot electrical problems; operates a CCTV push camera to conduct service line inspections; utilizes an electronic locator to locate sewer lines; operates various pieces of heavy equipment to include a backhoe, front-end loader, lawn mower, weed eater and other equipment.

Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in wastewater collection and operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Louisiana Class IV Wastewater Collection certification.

High school diploma or GED. Candidates with lesser certifications may be considered depending upon their previous work history, level of certification, and needs of the department.

Such candidate(s) selected for hire must enter into a written transition plan to achieve certification as a Class IV Wastewater Collection Operator.

Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver’s license at time of appointment and a valid State of Louisiana Class D driver’s license within 60 days and maintain throughout employment for this classification. May be required to obtain and maintain a valid State of Louisiana Class A or B commercial driver’s license. Will be required to obtain and maintain specialized certifications and/or training as deemed necessary.
