This role is a hybrid position. Qualified applicants must live within commuting distance of our Boston, MA or Goleta, CA office locations and should expect to be in the office a minimum of 4 days per week.
The Sonos Compliance Engineering team evaluates the compliance of our products. We are responsible for all new product designs and ongoing compliance of products in mass production. Challenges include keeping up with ever‑changing regulations, supporting new product launches, new country homologation and performing a wide range of compliance tests. The Compliance Engineer is responsible for ensuring that Sonos products meet all regulatory requirements. The right candidate will have experience with communication, documentation and management of a variety of compliance tasks.
What You’ll Do
- Ensure Sonos’ products meet all regulatory test requirements, such as safety (IEC 62368‑1, IEC 62133), Energy Efficiency, Electromagnetic Compatibility (FCC part 15B, EN 301 489‑1, EN 301 489‑17, CISPR32) and Radio Frequency (FCC part 15C and E, EN 300 328, EN 301 893, SRRC Regulation No. 129, MIC certification).
- Act as part of the Compliance Engineering team responsible for all new product designs and ongoing compliance of products in production, including expanding the new frequency range for market access, maintaining current product design sustainability, and qualifying alternate sources for design performance and sustainability.
- Own regulatory compliance testing projects for Sonos from requesting the quote to pre‑testing hardware and system to meet the regulatory requirements as well as arranging testing lab for chamber time and certifying products at the third‑party lab to obtain certification and test reports.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure compliance schedules match the overall program schedule. Inform product leadership of potential risks and provide mitigation suggestions to work with the team, facilitating debugging activities to ensure the certification schedule meets milestones.
- Work with third‑party labs to obtain new certifications and renewal certificates, achieve compliance for Sonos products, develop and implement compliance strategies for global market expansion (North America, EU, UK, LATAM, APAC…).
- Work with CM/JDM to track the certification status to meet the overall program timeline.
- Perform compliance tests for safety (Hi‑Pot, Touch current, Abnormal single fault), Electromagnetic Compatibility (Radiated Emission, Conducted Emission, Telco Emission, Immunity) and Radio Frequency (DFS, Adaptivity, Rx blocking, Contention‑Based Protocol, carrier sense, Duty Cycle, PSD, Spurious Emission, Harmonic, Out‑of‑band) certification.
- Analyze test data and document the results, evaluating testing data between different labs and correlating data to ensure compliance data are within acceptable tolerance and meet Sonos compliance specification.
- Prepare regulatory documents and submit to regulatory agencies to resolve compliance issues, including but not limited to working with reviewers to provide sufficient technical information (antenna specification, theory of operation, critical component list, block diagrams, test reports and DoCs) to the certified body or notified body to move forward with the review process to obtain certificates on time.
What You’ll Need
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science with 5–8 years as a Compliance Engineer with a broad background in product development and technical regulatory compliance.
- Strong presentation, written and oral communication skills, time management, project management and organizational skills.
- Experience with risk mitigation management and assessments.
- Experience in documenting product compliance requirements extracted from industry safety, EMC and Wireless standards. Experience with EMC design methodologies; Design for Safety and RF (wireless – WiFi, BT) certification in the consumer electronic industry. Experience with Environmental Compliance is desirable.
- Experience in assisting engineering change process and interacting with regulatory agencies, JDM/CM partners, testing lab, etc.
- Familiar with JIRA, Confluence, Agile, Arena to track and document issues and status.
- Willingness to travel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Engineering with 5+ years of experience in product compliance engineering.
- Excellent communication skills – written and verbal with diverse audiences, from engineers to marketing. Adaptable to both collaborative and independent work settings.
- Experience with mentoring junior engineers, sharing learning from industry trends and compliance technology improvement with company‑wide influence on engineering design and business decisions with compliance expertise.
- Experience leading cross‑functional initiatives to embed compliance into the product lifecycle management with advanced compliance portfolio strategy, such as use of partner labs, modular approval, technical trade‑offs.
- Strong analytical, communication and problem‑solving skills, and ability to multitask in a high‑energy environment.

The base pay range for this role based on geographic location is $108,000–$135,200. The specific pay offered will depend on the candidate’s geographic location, as well as qualifications and experience.
