Senior Admitting Worker

Shift: Evenings, Weekends, Variable; Shift length: 12 Hours
Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Admissions and Registration Supervisor in collaboration with the Patient Care Unit Manager, the Senior Admitting Worker is generally assigned a primary work unit but may rotate or be assigned to any area or site as outlined in the Admitting Department Expectations. The role involves greeting patients, patient identification, check‑in, registering patients, and coordinating escort upon arrival for services and/or after triage by the nurse. The registration process includes gathering demographic and financial information and entering it into the computer system quickly and accurately. Duties include cash collection and posting as appropriate. The Senior Admitting Worker must provide superior customer service, maintain professionalism, and utilize hospital information systems to communicate with patients and visitors while responding to inquiries. The representative must comply with all guidelines established by the Medical Center Policies and Procedures.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients and provide assistance during check‑in.
- Verify patient identity and gather demographic and financial information.
- Enter data accurately and promptly into the computer system.
- Collect and post cash as required.
- Coordinate patient escort to services or follow triage instructions by nursing staff.
- Utilize multiple hospital information systems for effective communication.
- Respond to patient and visitor inquiries following Medical Center policies.
- Act as an ambassador of the Medical Center, demonstrating professionalism and customer service.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED or equivalent.
- Prior experience in healthcare, insurance‑related or equivalent level.
- Ability to problem‑solve and analyze data to recommend changes.
- Multi‑task and prioritize effectively.
- Follow instructions and work quickly and accurately in a fast‑paced environment.
- Strong customer service skills, personal computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and typing speed of 30 wpm or more.
- Analytical and grammatical skills for verbal and written communication.
- Articulate and concise oral communication, and ability to write clearly.
- Collaborate with culturally diverse staff and patients/families.
- Work independently with minimum supervision.
- Work on‑site in San Francisco.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two or more years of experience in healthcare, insurance‑related or comparable level.
- Proficiency in health insurance eligibility and authorization requirements.
- Experience with Epic, Admissions, Discharges, and Transfers (ADT).
- Ability to speak English and a second language.
- Experience in a hospital, insurance payer, or physician’s office setting.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of government program regulations, MediCal, Medicare, MIA, CCS, and other third‑party payors.
Compensation and Benefits
Hourly rate $36.45–$45.59, based on experience and internal equity. Benefits include health, dental, vision, retirement, paid time off, and other benefits as outlined in the UCSF benefits program. The position is represented by a labor union; placement within the salary range is guided by the collective bargaining agreement.
