Save Job

At AstraZeneca, we pride ourselves on crafting a collaborative culture that champions knowledge-sharing, ambitious thinking and innovation – ultimately providing employees with the opportunity to work across teams, functions and even the globe.

Recognizing the importance of individualized flexibility, our ways of working allow employees to balance personal and work commitments while ensuring we continue to create a strong culture of collaboration and teamwork by engaging face‑to‑face in our offices 3 days a week. Our head office and BlueSky Hub in downtown Toronto are purposely designed with collaboration in mind, providing space where teams can come together to strategize, brainstorm and connect on key projects.

Our dedication to sustainability is also central to our culture and part of what makes AstraZeneca a great place to work. We know the health of people, the planet and our business are interconnected which is why we’re taking ambitious action to tackle some of the biggest challenges of our time, from climate change to access to healthcare and disease prevention.

Introduction to role: Are you driven to turn complex small‑molecule science into medicines that reach patients faster? As a Scientist in our Advanced Drug Delivery group, you will design and optimize formulations and delivery systems that unlock the potential of challenging compounds, directly shaping the trajectory of assets across our pipeline.

You will generate robust evidence through thoughtfully designed experiments, translate results into clear recommendations, and partner with project teams to move programs decisively forward. Can you see yourself transforming data into decisions that de‑risk candidates and accelerate clinical success?

This role is an opportunity to blend hands‑on laboratory work with innovative thinking—bringing curiosity, rigor, and courage to test bold ideas and learn from each result. Your impact will be measured by the quality of the science you deliver and the momentum you create for our medicines in development.

Accountabilities: Formulation and Delivery Innovation: Develop fit‑for‑purpose formulations, analytical methods, and delivery systems for small molecules to enable progression from discovery through development.

Experimental Design and Execution: Plan and conduct well‑controlled experiments with supervision, applying sound scientific approaches to generate reliable, reproducible data.

Data Integrity and Insight: Evaluate and report results clearly; interpret findings and translate them into compelling recommendations that inform project strategy and influence collaborators.

Novel Approaches and Technology Scouting: Contribute to novel formulation concepts and assess new technologies, finding opportunities to overcome biopharmaceutic challenges and increase the probability of clinical success.

Collaboration and Communication: Engage with cross‑functional partners to align on hypotheses, share evidence, and support decisive program decisions with transparent, high‑quality data.

Essential Skills/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Material Sciences, Biomedical Engineering or related scientific fields with 2‑3 years’ work experience in pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology environment.

Or MS degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Material Sciences, Biomedical Engineering or related scientific fields with 1+ years industry experience in pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology environment.

Proven experience developing formulations, analytical methods, and delivery systems for small molecules.

Hands‑on ability to plan and conduct experiments with supervision, generate, evaluate, and report data clearly and reliably.

Demonstrated strength in interpreting data and making recommendations to project teams and collaborators.

Active involvement in novel formulation development and evaluation of innovative technologies.

High motivation and a track record of delivering reliable scientific outputs.

Desirable Skills/Experience:

Advanced degree (PhD or MSc) in pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field.

Experience in preformulation and physicochemical characterization (e.g., solubility, stability, solid‑state properties).

Proficiency with analytical techniques used in small‑molecule development (e.g., HPLC/UPLC, LC‑MS, dissolution testing).

Exposure to design of experiments and statistical analysis for formulation optimization.

Familiarity with translational considerations for oral and parenteral delivery, including biopharmaceutics and PK/PD.

Experience collaborating with external partners in academia or biotech and presenting results to multidisciplinary teams.

Comfort leveraging digital tools or data science to enhance experimental planning and decision‑making.

The annual base pay for this position ranges from $81,041.60 to $106,367. Our positions offer eligibility for various incentives—an opportunity to receive short‑term incentive bonuses, equity‑based awards for salaried roles and commissions for sales roles. Benefits offered include qualified retirement programs, paid time off (i.e., vacation, holiday, and leaves), as well as health, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the terms of the applicable plans.

When we put unexpected teams in the same room, we unleash bold thinking with the power to inspire life‑changing medicines. In‑person working gives us the platform we need to connect, work at pace and challenge perceptions. That's why we work, on average, a minimum of three days per week from the office. But that doesn't mean we're not flexible. We balance the expectation of being in the office while respecting individual flexibility.

At AstraZeneca, you'll be part of a talented globally distributed team that powers our mission to better serve patients every day. We leverage exciting new technology and digital innovations to accelerate our evolution, strategically looking ahead to new challenges. Our entrepreneurial spirit keeps us ahead, applying creativity and taking smart risks to turn ideas into reality.
