Job Title Registered Nurse II – Surgical Care Unit (Sign on $15,000)

Location District of Columbia – Washington (CN Hospital (Main Campus), 111 Michigan Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20010)

Job Description The Surgical Care Unit is a 31‑bed surgical/trauma unit with cardio/respiratory monitoring at each bed. It specializes in family‑centered nursing care for patients with surgical conditions ranging from infancy to adolescence. Key patient subgroups include:

Pediatric General Surgery

Ophthalmology

Orthopedic Trauma

Spinal Fusion

Bariatric Surgery

All nursing practice follows legal scope, national and specialty standards, and the organization’s policies and procedures. Registered nurses are responsible for their own practice and are encouraged to build professional relationships within the community to promote health and well‑being.

Responsibilities Transformational Leadership

Contribute to Magnet re‑designation through updating of professional profiles and active participation in councils, committees, task forces, and community outreach.

Demonstrate critical thinking by problem‑solving in patient care.

Communicate and advocate to reflect the plan of care and meet patient needs.

Initiate escalation of issues following chain of command.

Use proper hand‑off processes.

Maintain a collegial and respectful relationship with ancillary staff.

Support change implementation and management decisions.

Structural Empowerment

Maintain regulatory requirements (licensure, BLS).

Plan for attendance at mandatory education and professional activities to advance nursing practice.

Participate in peer evaluations.

Collaborate with the health‑care team and model professional behavior and teamwork.

Utilize resources and know when to escalates to the next level.

Exemplary Professional Practice

Use assessment data from patients and families to ensure timely completion of the data base and plan of care.

Demonstrate clinical skills with complex patients reflecting analysis of patient status and appropriate interventions.

Prioritize and organize care for complex patients with rapidly changing needs.

Document at the highest standards of practice.

Anticipate and plan educational needs verified with patients and families throughout the stay and prior to discharge.

Model organizational skills, adapt to changes, and complete assignments on time.

Demonstrate caring in all encounters, evidenced by feedback and increased patient satisfaction scores.

Safety

Speak up when team members exhibit unsafe behavior or performance.

Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making and documentation.

Stop in the face of uncertainty and take time to resolve the situation.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

– BSN from an approved school of nursing (preferred).

Minimum Work Experience

– 1 year RN experience (required).

Required Skills/Knowledge

– Complete hospital and nursing orientation; keep knowledge base current with specialty area updates.

Required Licenses and Certifications

– Registered Nurse licensed in District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia (required); CPR; BLS.
