Reporting Relationship Director of Access to Justice and Strategic Planning

Location Chicago, IL

Purpose Under the supervision of the Director of Access to Justice and Strategic Planning, and in collaboration with other AOIC leadership, this position serves as in‑house legal counsel on all matters relating to compliance with the ADA and related statutes. It provides professional legal work, advice on non‑adjudicative matters, and project management for compliance projects and grant administration. The ADA Title II Compliance Attorney may supervise assigned staff as needed.

Essential Functions

Provide legal advice to AOIC leadership, court personnel, and judges on ADA, Rehabilitation Act, Illinois Human Rights Act, and Illinois Environmental Barriers Act matters.

Provide technical assistance on the Illinois Supreme Court Policy on People with Disabilities.

Conduct training with the Illinois Attorney General’s office and other judicial branch audiences on disability access.

Support Court Disability Coordinators for reviewing courts in handling accommodation requests, grievances, and appeals.

Support Court Disability Coordinators in circuit courts across Illinois on ADA compliance.

Project‑manage web content compliance for illinoiscourts.gov and vendor agreements regarding accessibility.

Consult with HR on ADA questions, recruitment of individuals with disabilities, and accommodation processes.

Administer the ATJ Commission’s Court Disability Grant and pursue additional funding opportunities.

Represent the AOIC on committees, task forces, and boards; provide legal research and counsel to courts.

Draft or review Supreme Court rules, orders, policies, and administrative agenda items.

Attend trainings, meetings, and conferences as required.

Maintain Illinois bar license in good standing throughout employment.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Education, and Training Requirements Candidates must hold a Juris Doctor from an ABA‑accredited law school and have at least seven (7) years of relevant experience, preferably in disability law or court administration. They must be licensed to practice law in Illinois or must obtain a license prior to employment. Preference will be given to those with experience enforcing ADA rights and working with diverse partners to expand civil rights for people with disabilities.

Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of ADA principles and processes and be able to advise and interact with all levels of management and stakeholders. They should analyze complex data, evaluate alternative solutions, and communicate orally and in writing. Candidates should be skilled in independent judgment, organization, and interpersonal relationships and be proficient in Microsoft Office Professional Suite.

Physical Requirements The applicant must reside in Illinois or be willing to relocate. The position requires extended sitting, telephone use, written document processing, computer operation, and travel throughout the state including overnight stays as needed.
