Position Summary

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Animal Keeper to join our team. This role is integral to ensuring the health, safety, and well‑being of our animal collection. Responsibilities include:

Prepare and provide appropriate diets to meet the nutritional needs of the animal collection, documenting feeding procedures and monitoring food inventory; order supplies as needed.

Perform daily health, welfare, and behavioral assessments of animals, documenting observations in the keeper logbook and reporting any concerns to the supervisor.

Assist in medical procedures, including administering medications, dietary supplements, and safely restraining animals during veterinary care or relocation activities.

Clean and maintain animal enclosures, adjacent public areas, the zoo commissary, and animal support facilities, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for animals and guests.

Design and implement animal enrichment activities to encourage natural behaviors and improve animal welfare; participate in operant conditioning and behavioral training.

Deliver engaging educational presentations, including “Meet the Animals” programs and ambassador animal interactions, to connect guests with the zoo’s mission and foster appreciation for wildlife.

Maintain detailed records related to animal care, enrichment, and health observations; monitor inventory and assist in ordering feed and enrichment supplies as needed.

Collaborate with team members to ensure zoo operations are safe, effective, and aligned with conservation and educational goals.

Minimum Qualifications

General knowledge of animals native to the southeastern United States.

Knowledge of animals in captive situations.

Knowledge of proper animal care and handling techniques.

Experience with animal restraint.

Ability to work comfortably and effectively with peers and management.

Demonstrated commitment to excellence in work products and relationships with co‑workers.

An associate degree in biology or a related field and two years of appropriate experience in a zoo, wildlife, veterinary, or related institution is preferred.

A high school diploma and five years of appropriate experience in a zoo, wildlife, veterinary, or related institution will be considered.

A South Carolina driver’s license, pre‑employment drug screening, and background check are required.
