The purpose of this position is to operate medium to heavy specialized asphalt and other heavy equipment to perform street maintenance and repair within the town. Employees in this classification are responsible for preparing and maintaining work records and minor repairs to equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Operates a variety of varied-purpose equipment used for street maintenance, such as but not limited to asphalt paver, asphalt lute, asphalt roller, backhoe, loader, bobcat, street sweeper, dump truck, front-end loader, milling machine, axle and tandem, leaf truck and snow removal equipment.

May serve as lead worker on job sites; provides instructions and coordinates activities.

Maintains time and materials records.

Services and completes minor repairs to equipment; transports equipment as needed.

Shovels asphalt patches before re-paving; inspects asphalt laid by subcontractors.

Lays out, measures and prints signs for detours and special events within the town.

Works with subcontractors to measure streets being repaved or repaired.

Installs storm-drain pipes.

Flags traffic during road and rights-of-way maintenance.

Sets up and breaks down for town special events; works at town special events.

Performs snow and ice removal as needed.

Sets up safe work zones as needed.

May act as and performs duties of division supervisor in supervisor’s absence.

Assists in cleanup when traffic accidents occur.

Performs other duties as required.

Position is considered “essential personnel”; defined as staff who are required to report to their designated work location during weather-related or other emergencies, even when town offices are closed or normal operations are suspended.

Requirements:

High school diploma or GED

Supplemented by vocational/technical training in asphalt repair and quality control

Supplemented by a minimum of three years’ experience or training involving heavy equipment

Possession of Virginia Department of Transportation flagging certification, or the ability to obtain within three months of employment

Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with air brakes required and acceptable record, or the ability to obtain within six months of employment

Tanker endorsement required within three (3) months of employment.

Tasks may risk exposure to adverse, environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease and pathogenic substances.

Due to the nature of a government providing services to the public all duties of this position are required to be fulfilled at the designated worksite in the town. No remote work is available.
