Job Overview
Under the general direction of the Controller, the Accountant is responsible for performing various general accounting functions, including preparing various financial reports, analyzing and reconciling accounts, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, preparing payroll and payroll reports, and tracking fixed assets. This position requires frequent interaction with others, tact, diplomacy, and excellent problem‑solving abilities.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Responsible for the month‑end closing process, ensuring transactions are correctly posted.
Prepares various financial reports, reconciliations, worksheets, and schedules.
Assists in the preparation and management of the budget.
Prepares payroll for all City personnel, ensuring all employees are paid accurately.
Prepares quarterly and annual payroll reports.
Analyzes and reconciles various general ledger accounts.
Identifies, tracks, and reconciles fixed assets monthly.
Performs internal audits.
Prepares and processes journal entries.
Prepares various audit schedules and works with the City’s external auditors.
Assists with implementing and maintaining internal financial controls and procedures.
Investigates accounting‑related inquiries.
Performs other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proficient skills in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Ability to demonstrate good customer relations practices.
High level of problem‑solving skills.
Proficient knowledge of office procedures, equipment, and financial system software.
Ability to communicate clearly and prepare correspondence, reports, etc., utilizing proper business English.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to establish work priorities and complete tasks within a specified time frame.
Ability to follow all City safety rules and operating procedures at all times.
Ability to maintain respectful and courteous relationships with supervisors, co‑workers, and customers.
Ability to prepare and analyze detailed reports, including financial reports.
Ability to work with minimal direction and supervision.
Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Two (2) to five (5) years experience as an accountant.
Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Preferences
CPA or CGFO certification.
Experience working with INCODE software.

Work Environment / Physical Requirements The work environment characteristics described herein represent those that an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is performed primarily in an office environment. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty‑five (25) pounds and be able to push and pull up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
