Function Statement Under the supervision of a senior technician or supervisor, performs tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of mechanical systems and equipment. Inspects, tests, installs, fabricates, modifies, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs all welded piping systems and equipment. Piping systems and equipment include, but are not limited to boilers, compressed gas systems, steam & condensate systems, air compressors, laboratory and industrial kitchen equipment, steam stations, heat exchangers, condenser water, condensate, chilled water and heating hot water. Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects.

Assists other trades as needed; adheres to all safety practices and procedures; cleans and maintains work areas and equipment; attends meetings; properly completes documentation; provides a high level of customer service; communicates to customers, coworkers and supervision via written, electronic and verbal methods and devices; operates department vehicles; performs other duties as assigned. Actively supports the university value of acting with integrity and personal accountability to establish a culture of professionalism in the workplace.

Shift, hours, days, and/or location are subject to change based on operational need in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement; may work overtime; subject to 24-hour emergency call.

Responsibilities Pipefitting and welding (70%)

Installs and repairs and maintains all welded piping systems and components.

Reviews blueprints and technical drawings, installs, repairs and replaces piping and components.

Measures and cuts pipes using hand and power tools.

Inspects and identifies leaks.

Installs, certifies, repairs, replaces and performs preventative maintenance on piping systems and equipment (e.g., meters, valves, piping).

Troubleshoots and resolves piping system issues (e.g., pressure, temperature, leaks).

Performs preventive maintenance tasks.

Performs equipment installations (e.g., fans, pumps, heat exchangers, trapping stations, valving, and welded piping systems).

Addresses customer queries.

Clears the work area after completion.

General Duties (30%)

Technical Support

— Ensures areas are in compliance with applicable codes; documents regulatory compliance tests; inspects and tests installations to meet quality standards; becomes knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfers that knowledge to staff; troubleshoots field problems; may assist lower-level technicians; locates, identifies, disables and enables local utility shut-offs; updates building drawings; participates on emergency response teams.

Communication / Record Keeping

— Documents labor, materials and work performed on work orders; submits material and equipment purchase requests; provides feedback on materials; creates estimates for small projects; informs customers when tasks are completed; communicates and initiates work order escalation if needed.

Other Department Duties

— Participates in professional development/continuing education activities; obtains and maintains required certifications; participates in meetings, trainings, orientations; participates on emergency response teams; interacts with and assists other areas and staff; may participate on committees; performs other duties as assigned.

Major Work Characteristics

Instruct others to perform tasks, provide guidance and expert advice about technical systems or processes.

Skills

Welding, brazing and soldering.

Cut and thread pipe.

Hydrostatic testing of installed pipe systems.

Problem solving/Troubleshooting.

Basic computer skills (data entry, retrieval, electronic communication).

Knowledge of Ohio plumbing code.

Planning and prioritizing work, resource management, troubleshooting mechanical systems.

Boiler operation fundamentals.

AC/DC theory and steam system fundamentals.

Minimum Classification Requirements

High school diploma/GED or equivalent education and experience.

Two years’ experience in maintenance, pipefitting and/or welding trade and related equipment.

Efficient skills and knowledge in using pipefitting and welding tools and equipment.

Basic understanding of plumbing code compliance.

Knowledge of piping components (valves, fittings, piping types).

Valid driver’s license.

Successful completion of probationary period.

Valid OSHA 10‑hour General Industry Safety and Health card.

Desired Qualifications

Associates/technical degree or vocational certificate in skilled trades/maintenance related field.

Boiler operator’s license (low or high pressure).

Valid AWS Certified Welder certificate.

Basic understanding of university building design standards (BDS).

Basic understanding of the project process as managed by FOD Design and Construction.

Physical Requirements Must be able to push and pull 70 lbs. and distinguish colors. Climb and stand on ladders for extended periods of time.

Unusual Work Conditions May work in hot, cold, dusty, or dirty environments for an extended period. May work in cramped spaces.
