Leads and manages a team of professionals in Generation Planning & Modeling within Energy Portfolio Analytics while aligning short‑term and long‑term strategies regarding supply side analytics within the organization. This position involves overseeing the production cost modeling within the field of supply side analytics for both the immediate operational aspects of power generation and the strategic, long‑term planning through the integration of resource plans. Manages cross‑functional teams of Engineers, Analysts, and other staff on projects to support strategic energy initiatives.
Tasks and Responsibilities
Use and maintain sophisticated production cost models that incorporates short‑term (5‑year) and long‑term (25‑year+) planning horizons.
Lead and provide variance analysis related to differing forecast vintages and variance to actual explanations.
Evaluate technological upgrades, market dynamics and capacity expansions, supporting integrated resource plan.
Work closely with Demand Side Analytics teams to align supply and demand forecasts, ensuring balanced and optimised portfolio.
Support expertise on fundamental and technical subjects and issues relating to load and renewable forecasting, weather, big data approaches and solutions, demand‑side management programs.
Work closely with fuel teams to ensure accurate fuel forecasts and wholesale hedging projections.
Collaborate with Commercial Portfolio Analytics teams to integrate market trends and pricing dynamics into production cost models.
Oversee the technical and economic analyses on conventional and emerging energy resources including renewables, nuclear, natural gas, hydrogen, and energy storage.
Lead and provide guidance in scenario analysis to evaluate the economic viability and operational efficiency of resource allocation strategies.
Engineer thorough understanding of Energy and Environmental Regulations and Policies, Energy, Fuels, Emissions Markets and Existing Energy Resources within and outside the Company Generation Portfolio.
Provide in‑depth analyses on power plant cost and performance, energy, fuels, environmental regulatory policies, and emissions markets to support strategic energy planning initiatives.
Understand and stay current on ERCOT protocols, energy market rules, and policies that impact the electric utility business and planning.
Provide analytical support for financial reporting and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Oversee market analytics programs to gather and interpret data relevant to energy markets.
Coordinate closely with the Financial, Pricing, Fuels, Power Generation, consultants, and other teams to ensure efficient, timely integration of generation planning results into the budgeting and strategic planning processes.
Oversee short‑term generation planning to support 5‑year budget studies, fuel adjustment cost projections, latest estimates, congestion revenue right auctions, and wholesale revenue net fuel cost forecasts.
Collaborate with finance teams to ensure alignment with budgetary requirements and financial targets and work closely to integrate cost insights into financial planning processes.
Collaborate with settlement groups to ensure accurate and timely settlement processes based on production and revenue forecasts.
Generate Request for Qualifications and Request for Proposal packages that include Scope of Work and evaluation factors that are critical in the selection of qualified consultants for generation planning studies.
Coordinate the creation and execution of Confidentiality Agreements to protect the intellectual property of CPS Energy and our counterparts.
Serve as field representative for consultant contracts with responsibility for ensuring contractor’s work is completed within scope, schedule, and budget.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Familiar with the technical and economic aspects of electric power generation resources.
Familiar with ERCOT protocols, energy market rules and policies that impact electric utility business and planning.
Ability to effectively communicate.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.
Must have favorable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Business Administration
Rigorous and robust analytics skills
Experience in Generation Planning and/or Production Cost Modeling
Experience with PCI’s GenTrader® / GenPortal and Aurora Energy Forecasting Software
Knowledge in developing big data extracts of differing data attributes, and data engineering to support needed analysis
Experience in contract development and procurement
Ability to effectively communicate at all levels of the company
Thinking Globally Managing Performance Using Math Delivering High Quality Work Communicates Effectively Coordinating Project Activities Education Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Accounting, Finance, or a related field from an accredited university.
Required Certifications Indoor work, operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi‑functioning printer and calculator.
Physical Demands
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Ability to travel within the U.S. and overseas to and from meetings, training sessions or other business‑related events. After hours and weekend work may be required.
