Job Description Supervises student‑athletes as assigned by the head coach in accordance with the Gadsden Independent School District’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include adherence to district rules, promoting participation in sports, and treating student‑athletes in a professional manner in conjunction with the athletic coordinator and principal.

Application Requirements The application will now require three professional reference letters dated within the last 12 months. If you are a current district employee, one of the reference letters must be from your current supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assist the Head Coach in developing a competitive program that excels in athletic performance, classroom achievement, and community expectations.

Create an environment where athletes can achieve academic and athletic success and enforce the “Code of Ethics.”

Monitor academic performance to ensure student‑athletes are achieving academic success.

Teach sportsmanship and serve as a role model of good moral and physical behavior.

Assume responsibility for the conduct and well‑being of all players, both on and off the field.

Maintain open communication with participants, teachers, administrators, and parents.

Cooperate with the Head Coach and other coaches; encourage athletes to participate in other sports.

Participate in off‑season and summer programs to improve skills.

Advise on safety, injury reporting, and use of equipment and facilities.

Attend professional meetings and clinics, and collaborate with the Principal, Athletic Director, Athletic Coordinator, and Head Coach to enhance the overall program.

Secure facilities after use and supervise locker rooms before and after each practice.

Adhere to district and state eligibility rules and report any violations.

Support fundraising and follow Gadsden Independent School District guidelines.

Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

Education and Experience

Employment as a teacher is preferred.

Completion of the New Mexico Activities Association’s online Coaching Course.

CPR Certificate.

Valid New Mexico coaching license.

Three years of sport‑specific experience is preferred.

Female candidates preferred for girls’ sports.

Demonstrated interest and aptitude for the listed responsibilities.

Supplemental Information Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations, compute ratios and percentages, and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical and Mental Demands Typical duties require standing, walking, use of hands, reaching, stooping, and occasionally lifting more than 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Employees must maintain emotional control under stress.

Work Environment The job is performed outdoors and may involve moderate to high noise levels.
