HEAD CUSTODIAN (Promotional & Open Competitive) Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, oversee and participate in a variety of cleaning and custodial maintenance activities at an assigned school site or administration facility; train and provide work direction to assigned staff.

Essential Functions

Plan, organize, and schedule custodial services; perform or lead the work of others; prepare all buildings for daily operations.

Monitor inventory levels of instructional and custodial supplies; order, receive, store, and distribute supplies as directed.

Lead and participate in the cleaning and sanitizing of restrooms, showers, locker rooms, shops, cafeterias, gymnasiums, offices, etc.; dust and polish furniture and woodwork; empty waste receptacles; spot mop spills; remove gum, debris, and graffiti.

Sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops; spot clean and shampoo carpets.

Clean classrooms, cafeterias, auditoriums, lounges, offices, locker rooms, hallways and other facilities; dust, polish, and remove debris.

Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restrooms; fill dispensers; wash mirrors, tile, walls and windows; unclog drains and toilets.

Perform emergency minor maintenance duties (non‑technical plumbing, carpentry, graffiti removal).

Assist in storing school lunches from the central kitchen.

Collect debris from school grounds; sweep concrete surfaces; water lawns and courts; remove graffiti.

Operate custodial equipment (vacuums, mops, hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines).

Replace light bulbs and tubes; clean white boards, trays, erasers; empty pencil sharpeners.

Move, arrange, and set up furniture and equipment for special events or meetings; clean up after events.

Lock/unlock doors, gates, and windows; manage lighting and security alarms.

Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards; report maintenance and repair needs.

Prepare work orders and maintain physical plant inventory, equipment maintenance records, and requisitions.

Schedule and participate in thorough cleaning and restoration during vacation periods.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Abilities

Principles of training and providing work direction.

Proper methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in modern custodial work.

Modern cleaning methods for floors, district carpets, furniture, walls, and fixtures.

Proper storage of equipment, materials, and supplies.

Requirements for maintaining buildings in a safe, clean, orderly condition.

Safety precautions and procedures, fire hazards in a school plant.

Proper lifting techniques.

Abilities

Perform routine custodial activities.

Maintain buildings and adjacent grounds in a clean, orderly, and secure condition.

Operate a variety of custodial equipment safely and efficiently.

Follow a work schedule and oral/written instructions.

Maintain tools and equipment in working order.

Move and arrange furniture and equipment.

Observe and report safety hazards and maintenance needs.

Adhere to health and safety regulations.

Meet schedules and deadlines.

Education & Experience Requirements Any combination equivalent to sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above and three years of custodial experience.

Environment Indoor and outdoor work environment, subject to fumes, dust, and odors.

Physical Demands Dexterity of hands and fingers; walking or standing for extended periods; seeing; lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects; bending at waist, kneeling, or crouching; reaching overhead or horizontally; climbing ladders and working from heights.

Hazards Exposure to cleaning agents and chemicals; work from heights such as ladders, scaffolds, and other platforms.
