Basic Function Under general supervision of the Plant Supervisor, performs services necessary to maintain swimming pools in a condition required for approved school activities and in accordance with health department standards. Works as a member of the custodial staff to maintain assigned areas in a clean, orderly, and secure manner and performs related work as required.

Representative Duties

Performs regular custodial duties in order to maintain assigned areas in a clean, orderly, and secure manner.

Brushes and scrubs pool tiles and vacuums swimming pool according to established procedures.

Operates a variety of equipment including water chemistry test kits, pool vacuum, testing and calibration equipment, and may use a variety of hand and power tools.

Monitors and maintains electronic chemical testing and control equipment along with monitoring and adjusting chemical levels to maintain healthy water conditions.

Inspects, adjusts and performs preventive maintenance to pool machinery and equipment including pumps, filtration equipment and controls, and chemical pumps; assists other skilled maintenance personnel with major repairs to machinery and equipment.

Performs a variety of cleaning duties including sweeping and hosing decks, emptying trash, cleaning drains and gutters and assuring security of the pool facility.

Inspects pool facilities for proper and safe conditions and operation including gates, fencing, diving boards, ladders, towers, lights and safety equipment.

Monitors automated backwashing procedures and perform manual backwashes when needed.

Checks and maintains pool temperature and pressure gauges.

Determines the need for related supplies, chemicals, and parts; stores supplies and maintains proper inventory and related records.

Maintains operational log of daily maintenance inspections.

Loads and unloads truck, transports, lifts, and carries pool equipment and supplies.

Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of

Health department requirements, safety regulations, and codes for commercial swimming pools.

pH control and temperature control for commercial type swimming pools.

Tools and equipment used in maintaining commercial type swimming pools.

Chemical used in commercial type swimming pools.

Proper handling and storage of chemicals used in commercial type swimming pools.

Proper and safe use of cleaning materials, such as soaps, detergents, ammonia, disinfectants, and multi‑purpose cleaning agents or chemicals.

Basic record keeping techniques.

Ability to

Effectively and efficiently clean, sanitize and perform skilled maintenance of District pools, pumps, filters, chlorinators and related mechanical equipment.

Safely use chemical cleaning agents used in swimming pool maintenance and custodial work.

Maintaining proper chemistry of swimming pool water.

Operate various pieces of equipment used in commercial swimming pool maintenance and cleaning equipment used in custodial work.

Maintain pool facilities in a clean, safe and sanitary condition.

Detect/estimate need for necessary maintenance of pool equipment and building facilities.

Perform heavy manual labor as well as know how to safely lift and move healy supplies, equipment, and furniture.

Show a high level of care and thoroughness when cleaning.

Maintain records.

Swim without assistance.

Schedule pool maintenance activities so they do not interfere with educational and/or co‑curricular pool activities.

Follow oral and written instructions.

Work cooperatively with others.

Education and Experience High school graduation or equivalent. One year of pool maintenance experience is required. Proof of certification in commercial pool maintenance may substitute for six months of the required pool experience. Some custodial experience is desirable.

Working Conditions Physical Demands Sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in or around water; dexterity of hands and fingers perform swimming pool maintenance; standard for extended periods of time; bend at waist, kneel, couch; reach overhead, above the shoulders, horizontally; walk; lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; see to perform maintenance activities, read materials; hear and speak to exchange information; climb leaders to read pumps and electrical fixtures.

Working Conditions Works in an outdoor environment and in adverse weather conditions; exposure to noise from equipment operation; regular exposure to fumes, odors, dust, and chemicals used to clean pool and chemicals used in custodial duties; works around electrical equipment and machinery having moving parts; potential of prolonged exposure to sun.
