JOB SUMMARY The Day Camp Counselor is under the direction and supervision of their Specific Day Camp Director and the Recreation Manager overseeing the camp. The counselor is responsible for planning, organizing and leading activities for their group of campers. Day Camp Counselors will work up to seven (7.0) hours per day, Monday-Friday, (8:45 - 4:00 pm) during the summer months. Camp runs from June 1st - August 21st. Paid training week will be from May 27th. This is an at-will position. Starting pay is $15.25 per hour. The range is $15.25 - $15.25 per hour. Hiring for Before and After Camp as well: Before Camp Hours 6:45‑9:00 AM; After Camp Hours 4:00‑6:00 PM.
Qualifications
Employee must be at least 16 years old or older. (Van Driver must be at least 21 years of age.)
Employee must be prompt to work.
Employee must be CPR and AED Certified within two weeks of starting.
Employee must possess the knowledge and skills of planning, organizing, and leading a variety of creative and quality activities.
Employee must have one (1) year of experience in leading children, outdoor recreation, nature awareness and camp crafts.
Employee must have experience in a team environment.
Employee must be patient, compassionate, and understanding, yet also be firm in decision making and assertive.
Employee must possess the ability to work well with the general public and Park District employees.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Help the Camp Director with planning activities and writing a lesson plan and newsletter for the campers in cooperation with other staff members.
Notify Day Camp Director of any parent complaints or uncontrollable discipline problems. Also notify Day Camp Director of any major health or safety hazards.
Follow all accident reporting procedures, including completing an accident/incident form and submitting to the Day Camp Director.
Be fair and consistent in maintaining discipline and maintain a positive attitude.
Make sure any equipment used by the Director or Counselors is put away neatly and promptly after an activity.
Report any equipment damages, supplies needed, and shortages to the Day Camp Director.
Participate in weekly staff meetings.
Help to close and clean up after the last session of camp in August.
Attend all staff training.
Demonstrate, lead, and support the Park District's mission statement, vision and core values.
Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the Streamwood Park District’s safety program.
Secondary Duties & Responsibilities
Maintain a courteous, polite and mature attitude when dealing with the public (even if not involved with day camp), answer any questions if knowledgeable, or refer to appropriate place to find the answer.
Exhibit quality leadership in teaching skills and activities to the campers and be an appropriate role model.
Adhere to Park District policies and procedures as described in the Personnel Policies Manual and the Day Camp Staff Manual.
Responsible for the health and safety of all campers.
Perform all other duties as assigned and/or needed.
Cognitive Considerations
Must be able to follow directions from supervisor.
Must use good safety awareness and judgement.
Must have ability to read, write and organize materials.
Psychological Considerations
Act as a role model and respect the environment, site and facilities.
Work independently in day-to-day operations with general direction of the Day Camp Director.
Demonstrate leadership qualities.
Work in a team atmosphere, while promoting the Park District's mission statement, vision and core values.
Maintain self-control and composure in difficult situations.
Recognize priorities and meet deadlines.
Receive constructive criticism and/or supervision.
Be flexible and adaptable to new situations.
Possess enthusiasm and drive with a desire to accomplish goals and objectives.
Environmental & Physical Demands
May be required to work both inside and outside during various environmental conditions, such as: rain and mud, hot and cold temperatures, exposure to dust, fumes, dirt and noise.
May be exposed to communicable diseases (e.g., chickenpox, head lice).
Operate and handle assigned equipment.
Have the physical agility to maintain mobility from site to site, and be able to perform moderate manual tasks.
May perform duties including: prolonged lifting, standing, stooping, bending, twisting, and climbing for extended periods of time.
Majority of day camp is held outside; weather impacts activities; have back‑up plans.
