We are now accepting applications for a Seasonal Ferry Worker for the following Ferry locations: Rocky Hill/Glastonbury and Chester/Hadlyme, in the Bureau of Public Transportation.

Position Highlights

Anticipated start May 2026 and ending by Aug 30, 2026

Monday – Friday, with occasional weekends

Full Time, 40 hours per week

First Shift – Temporary, seasonal position

Job Site Information The Rocky Hill Ferry operation serves local vehicular traffic between Rocky Hill and Glastonbury and plays an important role for bicyclists. Motorists traveling between parts of southern Glastonbury and Rocky Hill can cut nearly 8 miles (one-way) off their trip if they use the ferry.

The Chester Ferry is a distance saver, reducing the overland drive from Chester to Lyme from 20.3 miles to 8.3 miles via the ferry. The ferry also provides convenience for business and pleasure, with tourist attractions including Gillette’s Castle and the Essex Steam Train.

Qualifications

Any experience and training that could reasonably be expected to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

Experience with facility or mechanical maintenance or repair through work experience or coursework.

Experience communicating verbally and in writing to a diverse population.

Experience with computer software (Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, and Outlook).

Experience with vessels or boats through work experience or coursework.

Special Requirements

Incumbents assigned to recreational activities must be able to perform emergency first aid as needed and may require a current Standard First Aid Certificate.

Incumbents assigned as bus drivers or operators of a motor vehicle must possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator License to drive a bus and/or a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License as necessary.

Incumbents may be required to travel.

Knowledge necessary for dealing with and understanding an individual's behavior.

Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

Technical skills in the assigned specialty.

Ability to assist individuals in self-care habits, personal hygiene and appropriate social conduct where applicable.

Understanding and carrying out written orders and oral instructions.

Adequate physical strength and stamina.

Supervisory and leadership abilities (as required).

Minimum and Maximum Hourly Rates General, Patient Care Service, Maintenance, Laboratory Assistant, Recreational Aide, Transportation Services (Bus Driver), Tourist Information Clerk, Specialized Recreational Services, Tourist Information Coordinator: $16.35-$17.00; Information Technology System Analysis: $19.00-$22.00; Engineering: $20.52-$23.76; Legal: $19.00-$22.00.

Additional compensation may be awarded for returning seasonal workers, experienced workers, or college students based on criteria described above.
