Job Overview The Aide Special Education ECSE will provide direct support/services to students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings to access the curriculum in the least restrictive environment. The incumbent assists teachers and staff in implementing or documenting the student's Individualized Education Plan, including academics, behavior, communication, social, and personal care skills. The incumbent maintains a safe, engaging environment for all students. The Preschool Programs for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) serve students ages 3‑5 with significant cognitive, behavioral, communication, and/or physical disabilities who may require full assistance for daily needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Service Delivery
Interact with students in a variety of settings to ensure safety and engagement (e.g., hallways, classroom, restroom, playground, arrival/departure).
Assist with classroom management by maintaining attentive supervision of students at all times.
Execute behavioral strategies identified by the teacher based on ARD documents (reinforcements, consequences, contingencies).
Intervene using a continuum of behavior intervention strategies, up to and including approved physical restraint when a student is in danger of harming self or others.
Implement academic/functional lessons under the teacher’s guidance in large group, small group, or independent practice.
Assist students with personal care services (feeding, cleaning, dressing, lifting, positioning, transitioning, toileting, changing) – may constitute over 50% of the workday.
Under the nurse and classroom teacher’s supervision, provide school health services such as G‑tube feedings and medication administration.
Compliance
Record service implementation on approved logs (inclusive support logs, accommodation logs).
Routinely collect data on IEP targets and behavior in collaboration with the teacher.
Maintain confidentiality of student information.
Teacher Support
Prepare instructional materials under the teacher’s guidance.
Supervisory Responsibilities
None
Qualifications
Minimum of 48 college hours or a passing score on the Para Professional Assessment of Knowledge and Skills Test.
Texas Educational Aide Certification preferred or required to obtain once hired.
De‑Escalation/Restraint Certification preferred or required to obtain once hired (district-provided training).
Proficient in using Windows OS and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions Work is performed in classrooms, offices, workstations, and meeting rooms, requiring occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying items weighing less than 40 lbs. Daily use of hands, reach, and voice are essential. Vision requirements include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. The job may involve prolonged or irregular hours and demands emotional control under stress.
Additional Information
Work may be performed outside up to 25% of the time, exposing the employee to elements and inclement weather. Lifting and positioning students and applying behavior intervention strategies including restraint may present risks and discomforts, potential exposure to bodily fluids, and frequent childhood illnesses.
This position is funded by grant funds and may be discontinued if funding is no longer available.
