Attorney – FOIL & Records Access | Remote (NY)
Our client, a government agency in New York, is seeking an attorney to support its FOIL and Subpoena/Records Access Unit. This role focuses on high-volume records review, lawful redaction, eDiscovery, and subpoena response work in a collaborative government legal environment.
Key Responsibilities
Process FOIL requests, subpoenas, court orders, and law‑enforcement inquiries
Review records for responsiveness and lawful redaction (first‑level review emphasis)
Perform eDiscovery tasks, including review and redaction of electronically maintained records
Draft acknowledgements, notices, and related correspondence
Review authorisations, releases, and proofs of identification involving sensitive records
Conduct legal research and draft memoranda related to discovery or litigation
Support subpoena intake, monitoring, service acceptance, and tracking
Maintain organised case files, databases, and contemporaneous notes
Participate in internal unit meetings and assist with high‑volume workstreams
Engage with external parties as needed for clarification or inquiry screening
May assist with witness preparation or limited court appearances on an as‑needed basis
Qualifications
Admitted to the New York State Bar
Public sector experience preferred (volunteer or non‑attorney experience considered)
Familiarity with FOIL, FERPA, NY CPLR, NY Criminal Procedure, NY Education Law, and Privacy Law
Strong legal research, writing, and communication skills
Experience handling confidential information and high‑volume matters
Familiarity with document review platforms (Relativity, Logikcull, Nuix, or similar)
Experience with case‑tracking systems and court procedures preferred
Familiarity with the NYC Public School System is a plus
Position Details Rate:
$41.75 – $43.75/hour
Schedule:
Remote with occasional in‑person coverage (team events, unit meetings)
