The City is seeking a dependable and skilled

Sanitation Collector / Equipment Operator

to join our Public Works Sanitation Division. This position plays a critical role in maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy community through the efficient collection and disposal of refuse and debris.

General Statement of Duties Performs equipment operation in the collection and disposal of refuse and debris in the sanitation division of the public works department. Employee may be responsible for a small crew, depending on the type of equipment assigned.

An employee in this class works independently or as a crew leader in the operation of motorized sanitation equipment. Employees in this class operate one-arm-bandit trucks, boom truck loaders, open body trucks, street sweeper and other related equipment.

Special skill is required for safe operation in high traffic areas. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Sanitation Supervisor. Work is reviewed upon completion for accuracy and successful completion of the assigned route in a safe and timely manner. Positions in this classification are not exempt from the overtime pay requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Illustrative Examples of Work

Operates a one-arm-bandit truck in the collection and disposal of refuse from residential areas of the city; manipulates levers inside cab to dump and pack refuse.

Uses work order program to receive work orders, track work, report issues and completion.

Acts as a crew leader for sanitation collector on the back of the vehicle.

Operates street sweeper running routes and documents and reports amounts collected and stormwater issues.

Operates a boom truck or open body truck to collect bulk waste, yard debris, appliances, and furniture from residential curbsides; loads materials into open body truck.

Transports collected waste material to landfill; receives and follows directions from landfill operator regarding dumping location and turns truck tickets daily

Washes and cleans assigned equipment; performs routine servicing as needed.

Change tires as needed.

Perform task of sanitation collector as needed.

Other related duties as assigned.

Thorough knowledge of the street patterns and geographical layout of the city.

Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of the operation of medium to large size equipment.

Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to operate large equipment in heavy traffic.

General knowledge of the city’s policies concerning refuse collection.

Skill in operation of large sanitation equipment.

Ability to lead sanitation collectors in the completion of assigned tasks.

Ability to use work order program, tablets and computers to perform job.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Work in this position is medium work (exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects). Physical activities include changing tires using heavy duty equipment, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. The employee must have the visual acuity to operate sanitation trucks. The employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, including extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration, close proximity to moving mechanical parts, and oils. The employee is at high risk of coming in contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids.

The position requires a North Carolina Class B Driver License, completion of a high school diploma or equivalent, and some experience in the operation of motorized equipment.
